I'm new to TDR and I need some help with a noise coming from the 97 3500 I just bought. It seems to be a shudder kind of sound when the turbo starts to spool up hard. Its really hard to explain the sound. The turbo doesnt seem to miss or anything but it sounds like it would be. It sounds like a pulsing sound almost, it is very close together and fast. I guess pulsing would be the best way to explain it. It is not an even, smooth whistle it is very choppy. It only happens when you really start to get into the turbo. If anyone could give me some ideas of what it is I would really appreciate it. I dont think it is serious but I want to make sure. If you need me to try to explain it better let me know.

Enough blabing, sorry about the rough explaination.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the TDR! :)

I'd remove the rubber flex hose going the filter to the turbo inlet. Check excess play in the shaft, and spin it by hand for roughness in the bearings. Some up and down movement is OK, even new ones have a bit. Oil takes up the gap. There should be no perceivable end play at all.

Since you have a K&N "filter", check for dust on the inside of the hose. Also check to see if the filter has let some dirt through, polishing up the compressor blades.

I'd personally get rid of the K&N and get a BHAF (big honkin' air filter). I am only temp. using a K&N 'til a new BHAF to replace my old one. Make sure there a good bead of grease where the filter contacts the housing. It can let dirt in otherwise.

That is the sound of your turbo coming to the end of its life. I have the samething going on right now. That loud sound you hear is the blades scratching the housing. The reason why the sound pulses fastis because the shaft is basically bouncing. The movement may not be that much, but enough. I would have your turbo checked asap. If not, replace it.
