Competition pullin' advice

That was a wild story. Maybe I should start charging more. I pulled a couple of flooded vehicles out this weekend. I'm getting dinner and my expenses covered. Took about 7 hours in 1 foot to 3 feet of water.

Sounds like their timing sucked. My guess is that river grows every afternoon. Like a low tide, best time would have been to start early in the day before the heat of the sun melted the glacier and grew the river.

I grew up destroying vehicles in Knik. I would say driving, but you never came back Knik without something broken. My good friend floated his 1/2 ton chevy across that same river and ended up with a $5,000 recovery bill. Almost starved to death at the base of Knik Glacier. The silt in that river system is (in)famous in Alaska. I would never drive anything to the glacier with out supplies for two to three days. You will get stuck. It's just a matter of how bad.

Metal Creek

I've been to the glacier many times and I've seen the results

of people trying to get to the glacier when they don't know what

they're doing out there. The worst time to go up there is on a hot

sunny day in July, the melt in the mountains can bring the level up

several feet in the course of a single day. If you time it right you

can take a 4-wheeler across Metal Creek. I've got a pic of my

3/4 Chevy with a 6" suspension lift and a 3" body lift and 44s

out in Metal Creek with the water only a foot below the bed rails.

If I can find a scanner I'll post a picture of that.

Gus

By the way Knik Glacier was in the movies, it was the location for

the Ice planet in one of the Star Trek movies.

I have a rule of thumb. In fast moving water, If I can remain standing in hip boots (not fall over), I'll drive it in a 4wd or my 4wheeler. This water on the day we were up there was at least belly to chest deep and moving fast. You could hear good size rocks tumbling in the silt filled water. This is as close as we got on this day.
