As mentioned in another thread > https://www.turbodieselregister.com...sion-1998-5-2002/237151-d70-snagle-tooth.html

I don't want to mess around rebuilding my rear and would be better off replacing the whole unit with one that has disc brakes. Preferably a unit from a 2500 stick so I get a D80 but not mandatory.

Preface to my questions below - my 99 has rear only anti-loc, sway bar and is an 8800gvw

Questions:

1-Any rear I find if the truck its out of doesn't have a sway bar I'd have two options; not use my sway bar or cut the brackets off mine a weld them on.

2-Rear anti-lock is standard? Since the tone ring and sensor is on mine I'd need the same on the rear I'm looking for or speed and AL sensor wouldn't be present causing constant brake light and even other codes - yes?

3-Obvious that I need matching diff ratio of 3:54 due to 4X4.

I think that's it?

This should be a pretty straight forward swap with dropping the rear leaf hangers, remove U-bolts, disconnect brake line, e-brake cables and unplug the wire to sensors.

All thoughts appreciated.

1- Only the "camper specials/heavy tow setups" had sway bars. Depending on what you use the truck for you can remove/not use it. I took mine off years ago, but I don't have a camper.

2-Rear lock is standard and from 99-02 the sensor "should" be the same. If not remove you current sensor and put it in the new housing. I direct bolted an 01 into my 96 with a sensor and brake line swap.

3-yes find the same ratio :-laf

Good luck!

One thing FYI, starting model year 2000 axles were lengthened which resulted in tire track width increasing by 2. 0" Probably won't be to noticeable on a 4x4 since front axles have a little wider track anyway so should come out fairly close.

Yeah I could not really notice a difference, but it was wider

I did this to a '99 I had years ago. If you go to a D80, you will need the spring plates as well due to larger tube diameter. Drive shaft is also a different length (shorter)for an 80. As I recall, you will have to move the e-brake cable bracket welded to the frame for the new cables. I thought that the mounts were present on all the axles for the sway bar-you just had to bolt it on. I recall a different sway bar for the D80 as well.

I have a 1997 with a d70 drums, swapped to d80 with disc.

-Sensor wires plugged right in to housing and abs still works.

-driveshaft is shorter for d80 unless you want to use the d70 with disc.

-e-brake cable bracket does need to be moved as mine hasn't been done yet and the cable is too slack.

-either the bracket under the axles or plate on top needs to be specific for the 80

-took me only a couple hours by myself as it was pretty straight forward and the disc was the best thing installed on my truck :D

The valve in the rear of truck comes out. They're no longer needed as the disc brakes will be very well balanced with the front brakes. Works very well in the winter time. Master cylinder stays in there.
