looking into the nitto terra graplers. have 265's now, wanted to go a little taller but want to make sure they will fit before i order them. sits at stock level now. Actually the front might sit a hair lower than stock because of the heavy front bumper i have on it.
I ran 305/70/16 Coopers, then same size Nitto TG on the stock 99 potato chip chrome wheels. Never rubbed anywhere, came close to the mud flaps and lower control arm when turned to lock, but never hit. I eventually installed 2" leveling kit, not for tire clearance but just to level the front a bit. Og I'm running an 8" wide wheel now and there's still no contact.
One neat thing other than the flames on the side-wall and tread is the lettering on one side of the tire its block text on the other side of the tire its some fancy text - forget what its called. Check tires direct - I think at the time I got them they were like $5 more each than the TGs. I got almost 20k on them since I bought them. The TGs lasted for just over 50k.
No problem with the 285's on the ground on my '01. Had a problem putting one in the spare rack - - - had to put 2 - 18" 2 x 4's between the frame and the spare tire, and it was real close to the rear end.
Of course tire wear is mainly related to conditions, driving style, proper inflation, balance, and etc. , etc. ,
@ 20k they are wearing beautifully, very even and consistent - one of the reason this is the second time I purchased Nittos for my truck and more than likely will continue to when the next opportunity presents.
I don't understand why folks are having problems mounting the spare in the stock slot between the frame rails w/285s? I've placed my 305/70/16 spare in this slot for well over 7 years, the carrier cable works fine, my spare lock fits and aside from a little "encouragement" getting the spare into the last 1" of fitting - I've had no problem with the spare. There may just be more variables with others' exhaust, rear end covers than I have ? ? ?
My '01 was stock, the trailer hitch was the big problem. I could have made it fit by craming the tire between the front edge of the trailer hitch where it bolted to the truck frame, but as little I've had to use the spare, I didn't want to bend it in both places. Also the sway bar was contacting the spare so by lowering the spare 1 3/4 inches, then cranking it up it fit fine. Boards haven't moved and cable stays tight, and cable lock works fine. Only time I've taken spare out was to put ne shocks on truck. Picture of truck in latest TDR mag. Don't know page number
