Will a school bus engine work in a pickup?

A buddy of mine just picked up a '90 turbo diesel Dodge pickup, and it broke the cam. He came up with a deal on a '90 5. 9 engine and when it came in, it turned out to be from a school bus. Can this engine be made to work in the pickup? If so, what needs to be swapped over? Or, should he dump it and get a pickup engine? Or do we need more information to answer the question? Anybody?... Greenleaf?

i dont have as much expertise as the other guys do in this question, but i have looked around these cummins buses before and from what i have seen they apear to be almost identical. i imagine the only thing that is truely of any real diffence would be the trans, which shouldnt matter to you anyhow.

The bus engine will probably be a different horsepower than the truck. Get me the serial number from the bus engine and I will tell you. You will have to use the engine parts that are unique to the Dodge, the oil pan , mounts, trans adapter etc... Shadrach

Andy, can you make out the CPL and serial numbers on the tag... or was that them?

The ESN will be 8 numbers long and probable start with a 4. It might be call engine number on the data tag. Shadrach

Another option is to take the fuel system from the 90 Dodge, and put it on the bus engine. I'd bet the bus wont turn as many RPMs as the pickup engine will (when both are stock), but that's in the pump.

Thanks, guys. The engine is bought and paid for. We're just trying to figure out if he can make it work. I'm not the one looking at it, so I'll get more numbers asap.

The bus engine might have a P7100 pump on it. Dodge de-tuned our engines and stuck the VE on to keep the power down - didn't work did it! The only other problem might be that when the truck sees 3 or more kids standing on the corner it might want to pull over, pick them up then take them to school.

bob, did they use the P7100 pre-1994? ive seen a 1998 bus with the P7100 but assumed it started the IP change same time as our dodges did?

I did some research in the early 90s with Cummins North West about using the 5. 9 in airport fuel trucks and they came in HP ratings up to 300 HP. I can't be certain but I think the VE pump was used on lower HP engines mostly Dodge applications. At any rate it is worth looking for. As Shadrach said you will probably have to swap some Dodge specific parts over.

All 5. 9s useing VE pumps will be lower hp than those with P7100 ( except those in TDR members trucks :-laf ). The P7100 were used from 94-98 and in automotive applications went up to 230hp. The ESN will tell us all the differences between the two engines. Shadrach

I agree with Bob my boys and I put a '96 engine from a Fed-Ex truck in my oldest sons '90 and we just swapped the needed parts from the old '90 engine to the '96 to make it compatible to the Dodge...

The P7100 got is introduction in the 93 model year in some automotive applications, IIRC, and they ALL had it in 94 for the Egotistical Pinhead Assoc. Before that, Cummins used a CAV pump on their higher rated engines (~190+ HP), or so the 1990 manual says.

Yes it will work the only diffrence is the accessorys on the engine .



The early Blue bird busses had VE pumps around 190 HP



I got one on my 90 cummins in my Burb conversion and it runs better and starts better than my 92 cummins in my pu



Cummins just didnt reinvent the wheel for dodge they used parts on there shelves for any application may it be a boat , truck pickup or tractor

or sttionary engine this is the reason they are considerd a commercial engine not a consumer engine like the other junk on the market
