transmission Slipping

I'M PRETTY NEW TO THE POSTING PART OF THIS, BUT I'VE WATCHED AND TRIED TO LEARN FOR A WHILE. MY BASIC QUESTION IS HOW MUCH HP AND TORQUE CAN A STOCK AUTO transmission TAKE?? CONSIDERING ALL I HAVE RIGHT NOW IS THE BASIC DIABLO PUCK OF SAY 60HP AND 110 TORK, I THINK? STRAIGHT 4" EXHAUST AND THE K&N FIPK. I DO TOW SOME, BUT NOT HEAVY, SAY 12,000LBS MAX. ALL I'M REALLY WANTING TO DO IS BURN A FEW TIRES, AND UPSET SOME GAS RIG FOLKS. ANY SUGGESTIONS ON INJECTOR MAX SIZES, TURBO UPGRADES, OR ANYTHING THAT WILL GET ME TO THE LIMITS OF THE STOCK transmission, WITHOUT SMOKIN' IT WOULD BE APPRECIATED! THANKS!!

MIKE

Without smokin it, I'd say you're already there. Add anything besides opening the intake and exhaust and I'd do some transmission/TC work. My opinion.

Cheers,

Steve J.

THAT'S PRETTY MUCH WHAT THE LOCAL GUYS DOWN AT THE INJECTOR SHOP ARE TELLING ME, BUT THOUGHT I'D ASK AND SEE WHAT EVERYONE'S OPPINION WAS. GOT ANY SUGGESTIONS ON A BASIC UPGRADE TO THE transmission AND THEN WHERE TO GO FROM THERE TO GET TO THE DESIRED EFFECT?? THANKS!!

MIKE

First, I got to say,, Typing in all caps is considered shouting in this forum. You won't get many replyies, as many members have simply said,, "If it's in Caps, I won't read it".

As far as the transmission holding? The 60HP Puck you have is pushing it.

You can turn up the pressures in the trans some, but that won't gurantee anything.

depending on miles you can do just aVB, and TC, or you'll have to do the whole works. . then you can really put the Smack down everywhere.

Once you put some money in the trans, it's only up to your wallet with how much HP you want to put down. A $4,000 transmission can hold 100HP over stock to 500RWHP over stock.

Packy,

The other guys about summed it up, anything over 60 extra Hp and your pushing the auto trans into destruction.

I would also add into the auto trans parts producers this guy www.gbtransmissions.com , he is very good, reasonable, and professional to all his customers, have never ever heard anything bad about him, can not say that about the other vendors.

The question was "how long will it last?", there isn't anyone here that could answer that. There are just to many factors that will determine how long your transmission will last. The bigest factor in the equation is YOU. You have the most influence over your trany, how you drive, how hard you take-off,what you pull, and where you pull it to, how you maintain it,what oil you use,how hot it gets, and even what size tires you run. Everytime you move your truck, wear takes place. This isn't anything new, and all transmissions wear. The same holds true for the manual guys, everytime they move wear takes place, thou must is limited to the clutch. Some might need a new clutch in 30,000 mile while another might go 100,000 miles. Same for your trany.

I ran a VA box with 275 injectors for about 18 months, with only the valve body tweeked. Light towing sometimes. The stock transmission and TC did fine. With the same combo and adding stage 3 injectors, the TC was toast in about a month!

I would say don't push your luck any further if you are towing the amounts you stated.

Its better to replace some other stuff in your transmission now, rather replacing everything when it eats the dust. If you put some money in a TC and VB, it could save a lot of money in the future... . When you TC starts to go, all the junk material goes into everything else, clutches, and so on... ... just a thought.

Here is my Question... you say with the 60 added hp he is at the borderline now. But is that 60 total Hp? the reason I ask is this past weekend at the dyno adding a EZ to my stock truck, it only added 30 peek hp and 80ft lbs of Torque. It did how ever move my torque and Hp curves way down.

The Hp increase from a box or injectors in the auto truck usually is higher than the manual trucks, it has to do with different programs the ECM's between the two.

The maximum rear wheel Hp is some where between 240-260 Hp for the 47RE after that all bets are off, and some times it doesn't even take that much to kill the transmission. It's like y-knot stated, it's all in how you drive your truck.

Ron

Thanks everyone for all the great advice. Sorry to all those I offended by the "all caps". I will do better in the future. I think I will examine my options with the tc and bv, maybe install some guages in the mean time and then proceed to the injectors. My local shop is a BD dealer. I would like to hear from more about this. I hope I've got that right. Any more suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!!

Packy,

Look at my signature in my first post.

It about sums up my feelings with BD.

Hind site is 20/20.

If I was to do it all over again I would choose one of these guys.

www.gbtransmissions.com

www.atsdiesel.com

www.suncoastconverters.com

Just click on the blue urls above and it will take you to their website.

Not trying to pick on foreign countries but I have not had any good experiences with either one of the two companies in the country to the north of us.

Enjoy.

Packy,

You can get the auto transmission to hold tons of power if built right.

I know that DTT has lots of 700+hp trucks like:

-Snowman

-IdahoCTD

-Steve Opie

-Jim Fulmer

-Chris Sutton

-Ted Kobi

- Lawrence From DD

- DD's White Dodge

These are the ones that com to mind

and even some over 800hp like

JetPilot at 886hp which as far a I know is the highest Auto powered truck out there.

On a stock auto I wouldn't do much more than an 60hp box and Exhaust. Your transmission will only be as strong as the components in them, so make sure if you decide to go with an aftermarket unit make sure you find out what you actually getting.

How much will it hold? Well mine started to go south with 1,000 miles; That's right only 1,000 miles not 10k, 100k or even 1MM. Only 1k gently used stock truck miles.
