I've been talking to some people in these threads and it sounds like my lift pump is going out or is out. If this is true will driving my truck 2 hrs to christmas tomorrow and 2 hrs back in 2 days wreck my vp44?

not an expert but

I put at least 6k miles on my truck kinda knowing that the pump was dead before I got it in to the dealer, the previous fuel filter change it didn't prime and 5k later I found the TDR and on the first night had to run out and check for pressure, there was none it was a vaccum instead put another 1k on it till dealer had pump and could get me in. Good luck if you don't know for sure how long it has been dead it will probably run o k. Just my idea.

i've got no fuel pressure guage, my bowl didn't prime about 4000 miles ago so it musta not been working for atleast that long.

no fuel pressure?

It all depends on whether or not your warranty has expired , and if your willing to take the risk and ruin the VP44 injection pump.

One way to check it is : Turn key to start and bump the engine over momentarily but do not actually start the engine. Listen carefully to see if the lift pump cycles. You should be able to hear it.

Check your fuel pressure ASAP with a cheap gauge tapped into the port on the VP44 fitting. This way you'll know ,and what you need to do. Just trying to help.

Turned key on and tapped starter, ran to engine bay to hear no pump noises. Pushed in schrader valve on vp44 to have a suction, it gurgled air in, so my pump must taken a hit. at 113k my warranty is gone. I was going to use truck to run a 20 mile arrend, while warming up outside it died. I heard it in the house slowing down from idle so i ran outside and jumped in- floored it to try and save it and she died. Cranked it for 5 sec and it started, revved up, nice and crisp, so i pulled it back in the garage and took the ol reliable 79. Tomorrow it won't be xmas day and i'll go to the dealer and buy a new lift pump. Think my vp44 is allready toasted? It did same stall to me 4000 miles ago.

DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT buy it from the dealer!

Buy it from the nearest Cummins distributor for around 160 clams. The dealer wants at least twice that:eek:

No need to throw money away:D

Part # 3990105 is the new and improved model LP.

Cummins dealer?

Isn't that my dodge dealer?

So i take it i should find a big truck dealership? How bout Napa- i see its just a common looking Carter pump with a fancy harness wire on it.

good vp44s

A good VP44 should pull about 3" of vacuum with a new filter. If yours still primes, the VP44 should be a good one. If your fuel filter is old, you may fry your pump as the diesel fuel cools and lubricates it. You can get replacement VP44s for about $1400 through non-Dodge dealer sources. Any large truck (semi) dealership or repair shop can get you Cummins parts at about half the price of Dodge's parts people.

By now you know that the Dealer and Cummins are a world apart as to Price of Parts and service . Don't make smoke with dollars to the dealer . Get a fuel pressure gauge and use it to see if the pump is working on the short cycle then on the start cycle and watch the psi at normal driving or towing ,wot , idle . The price of a new lift pump, fuel gauge, and parts to install ,cost less than 1/8 of a injector pump and install cost . Every one that do not have a fuel gauge is just guessing that the pump is working . The sound of the pump is not a sure way of knowing if it is working and if the Psi if enough to supply the injector for run and cooling at the same time . Hope this helps . Ron in Louisville KYOo. Oo. Oo. :D
