Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) 241dld Transfer Case Problem

Just courious if overfilling a little SynTorque GL4 fluid to the transmission is bad for it?

I do have a noise in 5th gear with my new NV4500 transmission and wonder if adding some more fluid might help quiet things down since 5th is the toughest gear to lube.

I know, its a new transmission from Quad 4X4, but maybe it is just the gear noise. I have over 2000 miles on the new transmission and the noise is when I'm in 5th. The noise is a constant rattle that does not increase/decrease with engine speed. When I put the transfer case in neutral and shift through the gears and into 5th and rev it, there is no noise.

I'm hoping that a little more fluid might fix things. (I'm dreading the thought of driving to Montana for warranty work ... I can't be without the truck for over 3 weeks again).

Any thoughts?

It holds 3. 5 qts (if you don't have the PTO cover filters). Four qts won't hurt it, and is recommended often by various trans shops locally. I've always done it with no leaks or other malfunctions.

Ck. with Dan @ Quad, since he is your vendor and trust his recommendations, he's a smart guy.

Good luck

Andy

I got!!

i put 5qts in mine makes them real quite and shifts smoother. when I bought my truck the transmission was a little nosy to so I put in 2 more qts and it made hardly no noise. I als talked to a chrysler tech and he said that had to do with some of the reason why the fith gear nut comes loose cause it gets hot and cools down all the time and there is no lube up there to keep it cool ??? . But I would recremend it. Justin

If you dont mind me asking :) how do you get it filled over the fill plug? seems kinda hard or am I looking at this wrong.

You take your shifter out of the top of the trans and pour it in. Takes about 30 min +or-. Justin

yeah if you have the 4 bolt type. i hate the setup on my rig. i could use the smoother shifts though

If you really didn't want to fill it through the top, you could add an elbow and a short nipple to the fill hole. Use a pipe cap when you're done.

Thanks guys, I just was not sure if overfilling the transmission (even by less than a pint) would damage the transmission in any way.

Dan knows of my 5th gear rattle and will stand by his transmission. Its just that I would have to have it removed and shipped back to Montana (6 day one way trip) and my truck would be down for 3+ weeks while the transmission was checked out.

I'll first park the truck on the side of a hill and add as much as I can to the transmission. If I need more, then I'll break into the shifter tower (I have the new 4 bolt style).

If I still have noise ... we'll Yellowstone Park must be nice in the late spring. Maybe I'll drop off the truck at Dan's and go camping/siteseeing.

Dan told me he like to overfill them. He did on my rebuild. I would call him and see what he has to say about the noise. Does it have his Torque King shaft and gear? No noise from mine.

Yes, mine is a brand new NV4500 with the Torque King shaft. I have spoke with Dan twice and if I believe that there is a problem I have to get the transmission to him, for him to review and fix if it needs it. He said he would pay freight, but I still would have to pay the company in my area labor to remove and then reinstall the transmission. Also I would be without my truck for quite some time. Dan said to check the fluid level and make sure it is still full which I will try to do this weekend (nothing like working under your truck when it is in the teens and low twenties outside).

I have a little Syntorque GL4 left over from last years transmission fluid change and figure I'll try to put that in the new transmission to overfill it. I will order a gallon form Dan this week to "keep some onhand" for later.

It could be worse. It's 5 here and was -18 this morning when I left from work. BRRRRRRR.

Hope it's something simple like low on oil.

If I need to fill up the transmission from the shift tower, do you need to have the transmission in neutral or in gear?

I figure you remove the boot, then remove the floor plate, they you have access to the 4 screws of the shift tower. I assume the shift tower plate and shifter shaft come out together ... am I correct?

Try parking it on a hill or jack up one side of the truck to overfill the transmission.

Obviously you have to park sideways to get the fillplug up in the air.

Right side up and fill from the left side? So drain on the left and fill on the left? If raising the right side, it seems it would be tough to overfill on the left then. Am I missing something?

Jason?
