2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Will the VIN number identify the engine as a 12V or 24V?

I'm looking at a 1998 that's out of state and curious which engine it may have.

Maybe.

Look at the Dave Fritz Site, you'll see the information available to you in the VIN.

If you take the VIN to a dealer and con the dealer into checking it out for you, you should get useful information from the last six digits in the VIN, including a build date.

According to the fritz web site my truck has a 12 valve motor in it and what I really got is a ETH, so becareful of mistakes when decoding. Thomas

Have the seller check the VIN tag for the date of manufactor if it's 12/97 or earlier it's a 12 valve for sure. It may still be after that I'm not sure but before 1/98 It is a 12 valve I just went though this buying a 98 quad cab from WY. this week. Also as long as it's original on the doors where it says Ram 2500 under that on a 12 Valve it says "Cummins Turbo Diesel" on the 24 Valve it says "24 valve Cummins Turbo Diesel" good luck

I checked the VIN on Dave's site but it only indicates if it's a diesel. Unfortunately, it's a 24V which I found out through the dealer.
