I have a chance to purchase two complete sets of 4th gen wheels in excellent condition for an excellent price.

While both are 8 x 6.5 lug pattern, The Tradesman wheels are supposedly 18" and the the Night Edition wheels are 20" wheels.

Any advice at all appreciated on

1) direct fitment on my 2005 2500.

2) The LRE tires that fit both of these wheel sets have a capacity of 3640# as opposed to the 3150 on my 17" wheels ... is this generally correct?

3) I prefer a taller sidewall for its ride characteristics on the terrible county roads that I drive.... is there ANY advantage to the 20" wheel that I might be unaware of?

4) Any other advice, say for instance on purchasing 20" tires vs 18" tires

TIA

I have the 20" wheels and personally I'd prefer the 18" if I was buying another set.. as you mentioned you prefer some more sidewall and the 18" will give you that, There are also more tire options in the 18" vs the 20". I changed to 18" on my 04 from the 17s and there were tires options with up to 4080#, my Nittos were 3640#... Also the 20" seem to be heavier, but maybe I'm just getting old..

I can only help with #1: I put a set of 20" (midnight ed) wheels and tires (transforce AT) from a '21 on my '06 truck and the only issue have is slight rub on full turns.

yeah, I believe the newer wheels have more backspacing than the 3rd gens.. I was told the 18" Laramie wheels i wanted (from a 2018) would rub little when I was considering getting them for my 04.

3rd gen have a +44mm offset and 5th gens are +57mm so the newer wheels are closer to the frame and can rub on the control arms and sway bar.

I have both 18's and 20's for my 4th gen and like them both. The 18's are for hunting and times when I want more sidewall, but that's mostly for chains and low pressure running. I'll run as low as 40/20 on back roads, which is something I won't do with the 20's.

I run the 20's most of the time and aside from tire cost and low pressure I have not found a drawback. They are incredibly smooth, handle max load very well, and don't ride any different empty than the 18's do. I do actively manage tire pressure thou, so if you just run 60/80 all the time they would likely be pretty stiff.

I will be keeping the 20's for most my loaded driving and the 18's for those times I want a more aggressive tire with more sidewall for low pressure and/or chains.

Any idea about backspacing on 4th gen 18" wheels from a 2015 Tradesman ??

There is no 5th gen HD truck yet, but that data is good for 13+ 4th gen.

+57 , basically 4 link trucks from 03-13 or are +44, Radius arm trucks to 13+ 3500 / 14+ 2500 are +57 except Power wagons I believe are still +44 even new models but not 100% sure on that one.
