Will this hold the might cummins?

Sheet metal thickness ?

Repairing firewall insulation?

I don't know about that thing. I don't think I'd trust it. I've seen pictures of trashed HF engine hoists, and that thing doesn't look particularly strong.

Do you have the time to make one yourself?

I have one. I have had engines ( diesel and big blocks ) out of inboard boats with all the cast iron manifolds and attachments. Has held up well. I don't think you would have a problem with it. If you have a Harbor Freight store near you, go look at it, it is one they stock.

I would think that it would be hard to turn the engine on that stand unless it had bronze bushings in there.

Just knowing that it's a Harbor Freight made in china, I wouldn't trust it.

If you drop that engine, it won't be worth the small savings of buying cheap tools. Best bet is to rent a good engine stand.

I have one , I use it one my antique tractors four cylinder gas engines. that's about the limit of that stand . the 5. 9 cummins I have in the shop now dwarfs the stand

i have one but not sure id put that much motor on it, anybody else notice they always have the upright part backwards so that it points down on the display:-laf

I actually purchased one similar to that one same wt capacity and it did not even come close to holding. I had already pulled the head before I tried it on the stand. When lowering the hoist the stand bent right where the plate mounts to the pipe. The hoist was still holding most of the weight.

I have one. It let my Cummins fall to the floor one day. Motor had no head, and no pump on it so I estimate weight to be around 900 lbs AT THE MOST. I got the motor spun halfway around and BAM, it let go. The flat mounting plate actually sheered away from the center pivot tube. See the pics here.....

I had a welding shop put a much thicker wall tube back through the plate, and weld it on both sides. Now it is holding fine. I would say if you aren't doing motors all the time, it is an ok engine stand. Just support the front of the motor whenever you can to take the stress off of the mount.

I got one to replace an unstable 3 wheel one. I was an idiot once day years ago and tried to turn a fully built 454 and dropped it (killed one valve cover is all). I had a Ford 460 on the orange China special for the first time this week and it held that. I was questioning the head plate and tube and now I see that my worries are founded. I can't imagine putting a full 2000 lbs on there.

I wouldn't trust one like that for much other than a GM smallblock motor - that 2K rating is probably right up tight at the holding fixture, certainly NOT for a long inline diesel like the Cummins, where lots of the weight is out about 3 feet from the hanger...

Recipe for disaster!

i have a bmw m30 on mine at the moment and at under 400# fully dressed i am not feeling the 2k rating, the m30 is a 3. 5 inline 6 so i has a bit or length to it and am a little surprised it is sagging a little, more then the good tripod i had been using but the orange job has a much bigger footprint and is considerably more stable to roll around, when i get time i am planning on beefing it up a good bit

I have one just like it that I've hung several BB Chevys on. About 700+ lbs with all the accessaries. IMO, it is maxed out. It will turn 360* with grease and a long handle.

I think if I were you, I might think about buying one and modify it for more strength. Maybe weld up another pivot point to attach to and support the front of the engine block, slipped into the tubes where the front casters are.

Doing something like this might be easier than starting from scratch.

Just some ideas cause I hate renting stuff.

I have that same exact one and have my 405 out of my boat on it right now, even that engine is too much for it. I had to put a bottle jack under the front of it to take some of the pressure off of the plate on the back, I thought is was gonna break. I was gonna use it for my cummins but wouldn't even think of putting it on there now. It is a good cheap stand for small blocks, but I am gonna try to find a stouter one for my 5. 9.

Piece of crap! I welded a gusset to the upright and it supported the weight. Went to move the unit a foot and flopped over on the floor. Was lucky, not much damage. Now has 4 wheels and more gusset. Just a beefy piece of crap. Tim
