Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Will this puller work for VP44 gear?

Picked up this steering wheel puller to do the job.



I haven't done one of these before, so I am unsure of the size limitations to work within to pull the gear off the VP shaft.



Will this one work ok? (It's 4" wide end to end BTW)

it looks like it will work. that is similiar to the one i used to do mine.

I used a steering wheel puller to pull mine. If you don't have the right bolts to fit the gear, the long bolts that go through the grid heater work fine. I just had to use a washer on them to keep the small heads from pulling through the puller.

You might have to get some shorter bolts, it's close quarters in there.

I read recently that the puller is not necessary. If you tap the end of the shaft with a hammer the pump will break loose real easy. I used a puller when I did mine and recall it didn't take much to break the gear loose.

Most places just use a short piece of 1/4" steel flat bar with two holes drilled in it for the bolts. Can't remember the distance between the holes right off hand.



Pops right off.

I just did mine (two days ago) it should work. Threads are M8x1. 25.



I know alot of guys say the hammer trick will work - it wouldn't have worked on mine. I tried it, and I was hitting it alot harder than I liked. I just about hit the limit on my puller before it came off.



The other thing to watch - make sure once the gear comes off that you CAREFULLY pull the pump out and make sure that you orient the keyway to 12 oclock before you pull it - and don't snag the key on the way out. My keyway just about popped out when the gear came off - if it wasn't at 12 oclock I would have had to pull the front cover and retrieve a key... .
