Pulled my boat trailer today and 48RE went to 65 mph and 2600 rpm without going to overdrive. Had to let off accelerator to get OD. Flashed for this once before but it didn't help. Service Mgr. says transmission does not set a code. Does anyone know if delayed overdrive will or will not set a code. This also happens when pulling my fifth wheel. I have looked at all the 48RE reliability posts and this does not appear to be a common problem.

Thanks:: Bob

Mine does the same thing, if you were still accelerating just stay on the pedal, I have had mine go around 3000 RPM before shifting, I do not belive it will hurt anything. I think it is programmed to hold the 3rd gear till max engine speed before shifting if you are accelerating hard.

My truck gets to around 2200 to 2300 RPMs and then kind of "flattens" out for a few seconds and then contiues to accelerate and shift normally. It also pings a lot under pressure even when not towing. The mileage sucks. I had the dealer check for codes and there were none ( they said). They also told me no new flashes were out since Nov 2003 and mine was the newest. So I guess I will have to drive it until it fails or I get another recall. I had a trans line recall this week.

In your opinion, is this pinging excessive? Can you be more descriptive (I'm just interested in this issue)? What sort of fuel mileage are you getting?

I believe if the transmission computer demands overdrive and doesn't get it, it will set a code.

I get the pinging when under a load even if not towing. When I step on the accelerator but not enough to cause a downshift, the engine pings like a bad V-8 on bad gas. It does it but not every time. The engine shows no codes and the dealer wouldn't reflash it. The mileage is about 14. 7 around town and I got 10 towing. Much less than I got with my 2002 Ram 2500 towing the same trailer.

What year is your truck, and how many miles do you have?

With diesel knock, the decision whether it's bad enough to warrant some work is left to the ear of the technician. That's why I asked just how bad you think the pinging is. What's your fuel source? Consider trying a different brand fuel altogether next time you fill up, to see if that has any effect. Where do you live? Might they still be on winterized diesel?
