Wilson Cellular Amplifiers???

Anybody used these? I am curious just how good they work. I have used the wilson cell antenna's for a few years now and have been very happy.



Here is my deal. I got a new cell phone the other day. It is an Audiovox 8600. So far I cannot locate an adapter from Wilson that will work with my antenna setup. I probably should have checked that first. Oh well. I really like the phone. IF these amplifiers work as advertised I would probably pay out the money for one. I spend alot of time in areas where reception can be very iffy. It would be nice to have something that can make the difference. I like the convenience of these small litlle phones but I miss the power the old bag phones had for distance to a tower.

Cowboy, don't know if it's the same as the Wilson, but I got a Smoothtalker from azcummins and it works great. Gives me full signal where before I had nothing. Well worth the money if you're in the sticks a lot.

Jim Fuller also has the smoothetalker and swears by it. . he is in Montana and as you know all rural guys have issues... this fixed most of his except where no one get a signalville. .

I was going to buy it for my wifes car but found out they had wired her wrong . . fixed the wiring and now it works great [it's factory amplified and through the radio system]

I just ordered an 8600 after trying one out. I just switched out of my old Nokia analog to digital. Wow, what a difference. The first digital I tried was the new Motorola T731. It had a loud ringer which I need. But, with the earpiece volume all the way up, I couldn't hear the person on the other end. It wasn't loud enough for my wife, who has normal hearing, either. So, I ordered the 8600. It has a speaker phone which is really loud. Hope the new phone works as well as I think it will. I'll be following this amplifier thread with great interest.

FYI the local dealer didn't do the installs. . they sent me to a stero installer , who lucky for me would not install saying the thought my wife's car had a amp in line from the factory. . [it did] and would not install till I found out for sure...



so if you have a factory phone installed be careful as ther may be a amp already in there and you cant have both or you will have a blow unit...

Thanks for the responses guys. Right now I am still leaning towards the Wilson, because it looks like I can use the antenna I already have mounted to my truck and it is a repeater, which means not having to connect wires to my phone which would be nice. Still would like to hear from some who have direct experience.



BSkinner, So far I love the phone. It took me a few days of playing around to figure out exactly how everything works. At first I was kinda unsure. I have always preferred simple when it comes to cell phones and thought I may have gotten glitz instead of go. I am very happy now though. Anout the only thing I would change would be the ringers. It has the "get it now" stuff so you can download new ones, but I would really love some regular rings instead of all the musical ones. I just don't care for the ones it offers and I haven't found any to download either that are what I am looking for. Most of the time I just have it on vibrate anyway, but when I have it charging in the truck or at home it would be nice to just hear it ringing instead of wondering where that wierd music fits into the movie I am watching and then going "Oh yeah, that is the phone"



Anyway, I will keep researching and let you guys know what I find out and when I get one I will report back on it as well.

I have the Wilson unit installed in my truck. For the most part it does work fairly well. It is not a miracle worker, it does still drop calls every once in a while. The part where you do not have to have the cable connected directly to the phone is a nice feature. It actually allows anyone in the vehicle to have use of the repeater. So if you have several people in the truck, they will also have the benefit of the system.

I have had the system on my pickup truck with a roof mounted wilson antenna and it does pretty well. I also tried it on my semi truck with a Wilson Trucker antenna and it seemed to work even better!! but you have to realize that the antenna on the semi is almost 12 or 13 feet in the air. (pretty clear shot for the signal)

All in all, I guess I would recommend it. I am able to pick up signals in places that I was not able to before. The unit is a little pricey but it does work.

You can hook any antenna up to the smoothtalker.

We work all over southwest Texas and without the 3-watt amp(smoothtalker) our digital phones would be useless. The smoothtalker amp really works well for us.
