Who's your helper?

I know this isn't the proper place for this question, but its driving me nuts.

This past weekend I upgraded my computer to Windows XP. All has planned..... except for one thing.

When I'm online typing a message or a reply. As I type... sometimes nothing is being displayed on the screen. . Sometimes it appears within a few seconds.

Better still, sometimes words appear I didn't even type. I know I have a slow connection but that part hasn't changed... and it worked before.

What is going on?the

I don't know if this is related, but there is a problem with XP that allows hackers in. Either download the patch from www.microsoft.com or do the following:

open control panel

double click administrative tools

double click services

scroll down and double click SSDP discovery service

in startup box, select disabled, click OK

scroll down and double click universal plug and play device host

in startup box, select disabled, click OK

restart computer.

The above fix was in the Las Vegas Review Journal today.

hope it helps.

Windows XP....

I still have 95 on all my computers that I have some athority over. I never liked 98, and not too fond of XP so far, I think I just need to spend some more time on it. I have been looking at notebooks, and it's hard to find one with 95:D

I too have been thinking about Linux for about 2 months now. Redhat here i come.....

Sounds like you may have a BIOS problem. Your keyboard and the operating system may not be communicating correctly. If you have an older computer, you may need to upgrade (re-flash) the BIOS. Check with the company that made your computer and see if the BIOS in your model is compatable with XP.

DM, get rid of that kiddy operating system and get Windows 2000:p

Often upgrades over an older OS don't work well. Usually cleaning the disk (format:mad: ) and starting the OS load over works much better.

Seriously, Win 2000 is bullit proof. Once you try it you'll never go back. I used to have to reboot lots with Win95,98, etc... Once I moved to Win NT and then later to Win 2000 I never have lockups or weirdness. (yes, I reallly mean never... :D)

My guess is you don't have enough system memory.

XP does stand for eXtra Programs

hehe, so you know about the hidden flight simulator program that is in there just to take up memory so the general public is conned into buying a new "better" computer that they do not need.

but that is just a rumor:p :p :D

Computer Specs

Computer specs:

2 Gigahertz Pentium 4 Dell Dimension

512 Meg Ram

60 Gig Hardrive

After partitioning the drive into 2 30 Gig drives, I performed a clean installation of XP Professional using NTFS disk allocation. (Win 2000 format vs. Win 95/98/ME's FAT32 disk allocation)

All programs have been working fine, both before and after OS change.

I generally do not go for the latest programs till I'm sure the major bugs have been fixed. But I guess with Windows... . that would mean I would never upgrade :D

As for the Apple suggestion. Been there, tried that. The G4 was an absolute gem of hardware and software compared to a PC... . I just found it to be a burden because everyone I deal/work with... has PCs.

I think my problem was that security breach, because as I type this post... ... everything is fine. No letters or characters automatically appearing on the screen. It would appear, if this was the case, someone was trying to hack my computer. Oh well, thanks for the help... . hopefully things are on track.

Back to the love of our lives.

Windows XP Pro is the next OS in line from NT40 and W2K. Built on the same NT Code. Great OS. I have upgraded about dozen boxes mostly Dell's. Have 4 new machines preloaded with it. It is as stable as W2K but faster.

It is a real step up from 95-98-ME. Those running W2K will only gain speed and more built in graphic image software/options.

I would not have in anything less 128 Meg ram or less then Petium 400.

If you have W2K and it runs fine you would really like XP. Not sure it the $200 is a reasable price though.

XP Pro supercedes Win2000.

I just installed the XP home on my computer and absolutely love it. I had to reformat my HD for other reasons, and the clean install probably helps a bunch. It has yet to hiccup in over a month. I replaced WinME.

I did change the interface to that of the more 'classic' windows style. Didn't like the as installed interface, which was definitely made for someone who doesn't know there way around a computer.

I've been toying with switching to Linux myself. You guys keep us posted on the pros and cons of Linux when you get it running.

What I find amusing is that owners of Microsofts Xbox are having to run Linux to do the interactive online gaming right now.
