need help with flatbed wiring on 03

12 volt camper night light

Depending on how they are adjusted, they can move the bug line up on the front of the 5th wheel.

Some individuals claim minimal fuel mileage and/or stability improvements; others have not noted any. From the posts on RV boards, they seem to be more effective with a vehicle like a Suburban pulling a travel trailer where they are mounted farther back on the tow vehicle roof than they are on a pickup towing a 5th wheel.

But you're right - they look cool! :D

We had a chicken wing on our "team truck" when we were racing late models last year. If we didn't have a Pete available and were towing the aluminum trailer (44' fifth wheel) we used the Chevy Dually. The wing on our truck helped tremendously with drag but as far as mileage goes, I don't think you'll see much of an improvement with a diesel. But with a gas guzzler, it might help more because they don't like to work as hard as the diesels and it keeps them in their narrow RPM band.

Hope this helps, just my experiences.

Wing

Have a friend that has one, his is mounted just behind the CC cab, through his experiments, found that to be the line for his to be effective, get the air up and over. figures his mileage is up . 5 or so from what is was, found that it pulled better, less bucking, so to speak.

just my penny's worth.

Mileage increase is very minimal, I've had mine for about 2 years now. It varies too, I've seen it help on average only about . 5 to . 7 mpg. Because there are so many other variables in the equation, its difficult to put an exact number on the gains.

That being said however, I think the handling improvement is worth the cost alone. The trailer pulls much smoother and it reduces the amount of buck experienced in a headwind especially. Although they make no claim to improvements in crosswinds, I did noticce an increase in stability.

I hear more from people about the handling than mileage, like Rusty pointed out, proper angle and adjustment is crucial. Oh, and another nice thing is it really cuts down on bugs;) - they are easier to clean off the SS wing than the nosecone of the trailer.

You guys have got me thinking about these things again and I started researching. I just learned that Taylor Wings (these folks bought out the original TurboWing) guarantee a 10% fuel savings or your money back. That's considerable being as most of us will spend close to $2000 or more on fuel if you're truck is a working truck or daily driver. I'm sure the guarantee is for diesels too...

I thought about getting a wing but I think our 4WD trucks sit too high to add even more height to the truck. They look much better on 2WD trucks and even better on lowered trucks. The Chevy I mentioned above had bags on it and usually rode with the wheels tucked. It was sweet.

Those lighted wings are nice too, though it might be a little too much for our trucks, don't know... I've seen one TDR member with the lighted model and it looks really good. I guess it all depends on what you like.

i'm not sure if it helps with mpg but i sure could feel less wind resistance while pulling my 5er. then again,,,with bully dog 6's and a drag comp on the truck i'm not looking to save fuel:D

Every time I see the local ricer with his wing, I say to myself & Wife "my wing is bigger than his"

I'v had mine for two years (Taylor Wing), Towed approx 3500 miles with it. The wing is mounted on top/back of a Leer cab high topper. I have not gained much in MPG (cause I keep up with traffic) I will say the stability is much improved pulling over 55 to 60 mph. Bugs are less. For me, it was worth the money because the whole rig will stay where I want it between the travel lines. Before I got the wing, over 55 to 60 mph, My rig would take up the entire 12 foot lane.

Big Plus = LOOKS WAY COOL :D

Really not trying to start anything here but if you could really feel less resistance then you would have a mpg increase because MPG are directly related to resistance. Less resistance = more MPG.

Stability I can see because wind direction would be changed to flow more straight along the lines of the towed rig.

I think what most are feeling is stability with a more even air flow.

airflow

ronsram is right.

The air has a direction to go with a wing.

Without a wing, the air hits the front of the trailer and goes anywhere. Thus, the effect of wing directs the air flow over the trailer front.

That is why I said the improvements were in handling and not in resistance. The mileage gains are CERTAINLY not 10%, and if you are buying a Taylor wing for those reasons, save your money. I have never come accross anyone who got that kind of improvement, and I've asked around. Before you start in on me, I'm sure someone has, but I think claims in general are overstated ;) .

One noteworthy sidenote is that if you leave the wing on all the time while cruising around empty, you will kill any mileage gains seen from towing. While my mileage gains are minimal while towing, I see a 2mpg DROP while running empty.

Also, keep an eye out on the bed rack if that is how (as most do) choose to mount the wing. There is alot of stress placed in a small area and it can develop stress cracks. Taylor has a new and improved EZ-Rack out there, and I hope it holds up better than the original design.

ok,,so,,more even air flow has to = less resistance and better stability which = more mpg. just like i stated (less resistance).

i never check mpg because i really don't care about mpg.

i got mine because i like the way it looks.

mtngoat,,to answer your question,,yes,,they do help but if your buying one just for mpg issues it will take alot of miles to re-coup the cost especially if you get a high quality made wing like TAYLOR makes.
