2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission winter maintnance

took off my serp/belt to check it only has 20k on it Gates. mild cracking. probley put new dayco on it. was checking pulleys on water pump and idle/tension pully they werent squeaking or no metal to metal sound just a slight sound when you turned them cant explain the sound. are these pullys supposed to be completely quiet. or have alittle sound when turning. my truck had a small squeak up front could not locate it when starting the truck only with a cold truck and cold under 50 temps did it last year, and again now that fall is coming and getting colder mornings the sound is back. unless this sound is from the belt.

Put a belt on mine on Sat. Napa is a gates belt, paid $37 (with AC). better saft than sorry.

does anyone know if these pullys if in good shape will still make a small sound when turning. not metal to metal or drag resitant sound just slight sound?

They will have some noise in them. Biggest thing is play. If they are tight, then you will hear the bearing turn and the seal drag. If it wobbles more than just a "hair" and the bearing sounds dry, then replace it. I am looking at a replacement pulley for mine. You can get only the pulley and not have to replace the whole tensioner. I think Genos carries them.

There is a roller bearing in the idler pulley... it should not make any noise that you can hear... We've replaced that bearing on each of our high mileage trucks... When we do, we pull one of the seals on the new bearing, clean it, and add back synthetic grease that we use in our clutch bearings and re-assemble... .

I don't remember replacing any of the belts... . I'd have to go back to the log and check but our 04 now has close to 300K... I guess that we should add that we have a 30 HP screw compressor that runs 9 hours a day 5 days a week and we will run that belt for 3 years before we change it... . about 6,000 hours. . and it uses the same design of belt...

I relaced my belt this summer before the towing season. I had only 70,000 miles on it but I look at the age more than the miles put on it.

I replaced my belt @ 100K, just because I felt sorry for it. I still had life it it.

I've heard bearings that sounded "dry" (for lack of a better explanation of sounds) I'd look into one that sounded like this.

The sound is somewhat similar to a large piece of round steel stock rolling across a heavy steel workbench.

thanks for the replies Im probley going to just change them out in the next month or 2 just to be safe or at least have them ready if something happens I keep forgetting when I bought my truck it already had 110 miles on it I rebuilt the engine reset the odometer and now have almost 160k so alot of the truck has seen 250k miles. the belt has some cracks but that doesnt mean anything belts and small things I guess our cheap insurance and after all I am my own warranty.

water pump

forgot to ask I found a reman. cummins water pump on rockauto.com for around 55. 00 is this good to go with even though its a reman.

When I had my big truck, most everything was a re manufactured or "recon" part.

It really depends on who's doing the re manufacturing.

Rock auto has a decent reputation.

I've not had to replace a water pump but I think I read on this sight that the pump is available new for under $50... .
