Rotella T Synthetic

Bd Twin Turbo!!!

I am wondering what weight oil I should run in my 2001 dodge 6sp H. O. I go up to Canada in the frigid temps of sometimes around 20 to 30 below ferenheight. I run 15w40 normally and have always since i've had it new, but when I start it up there it crankes over pretty hard after that oil has set for about 3 to 5 days in those temps. Should I just keep running the same weight oil or should I change to something else? Thank you.

I would run a 5w40. It will start much better in the cold and you can run it year round. I don't want to start a brand war, but give your location I would definitely recommend Petro Canada Duron Synthetic 5w40.

Ffor those oil guys reading, yes it is a Group III oil. In an SAE paper published a year or two ago it held it's own right right next to Delvac 1 5w40 which is a Group IV oil.

You might want to switch to a lighter oil, I run 0W-30 year round. Also synthetic oil would be a wize choice, You pick the brand.

15w40 summertime, 5 or 0w30 wintertime and it gets cold for weeks on end up here. I use Amsoil 5w30 and the cranking is easy even at the coldest temperature.

Winter oil

Just switched over to Mobil Delvac 1 5W/ 40 in October. As temps are getting into the teens here in the Rockies I've noticed a big difference in start-ups. The pick-up used to take awhile to settle down with Delo 400. Now the pressure comes up quickly and no stumbling or roughness coming to an idle.

I don't like how thick 15w/40 gets when it's "really" cold. Think I'll stick with a synthetic now that the Ram is broke in.

In extreme cold climates use a lighter oil like 5-40 instead of 15-40 or even 10-30. I once done an experiment on the pour ratio of a 15-40 verses 10-30 and the 15-40 poured faster than the 10-30 in subzero temperatures so be careful in the brands you pick, also not all products labeled as synthetic are true group 4 synthetic PAO base and higher oils, alot of them are group 3 mineral base and lower oils. I am only saying why pay the same amount of money for a group 3 when you can have a group 4 or higher. If there is a big cost difference between the two then in some cases the group 3 would be more cost effective, it all depends on what you expect out of your oil.
