Bob, you might want to try pluging in for two Hrs. +/- just before you leave on those 30-40 degree mornings. The cab heat will come up real fast and I think your engine will be happier.

Let me tell you what sucks. I pulled up at work and the computer monitor read
-4 F at about 7:30 AM. Truck sat there for about 11 hours. I turned the key on and while waiting to start computer temp said 0 F.

It turned over much slower than normal (which is what I expected), but then it seemed to only run on about 5 cylinders. I guess its more difficult to get the warmed heater grid air in one or two cylinders, plus the 1st and last two cylinders are on the outside most. So they're probably harder to warm up.

It smoked heavily, and I drove it slowly around the parking lot before I turned it over to the, "War Department. " I wanted to drive it home just to pay attention to what it was doing, but, the, "War Department," said she wanted to drive it, so to avoid conflict I followed behind in a company car. I could tell it cleared up after less than a mile, though.

I hope it not firing on a cylinder for a while won't have any adverse effects. My guess is that it won't because it was still getting oil/lubrication. I checked it at a stop on the way home and it was running fine.

If I could, I'd bring a long extension cord and plug the sucker up, but that just ain't going to fly at work. Does anybody have any suggestions for cranking it up at such a cold temperature without the use of the block heater?

Bigsaint~I will try it the next time temps get to the 30 or 40's. Probably right the enigne will love it and it sure can't hurt if I am more comfortable sooner either.

JyRO,do a search here at the top of the page for Espar, lot of info. The Webastos & Espar are basically diesel fired block heaters with timers, pumps and will even turn on your heater. While expensive, the people who have them love them,I'd have one also but an AC plug has always been handy for me.
As you probably know even though our Cummins will start in cold temps it's definitely not good for them, when you look at it from that aspect the Espar is cheap.

Salty Chad? That's a new expression for me,must mean pricey in right coast lingo. The Espar for our trucks runs around $1200. Running on one cup diesel per hour might be cheaper than electricity in some areas though.

I just got back from a 579 mile round trip over the sierras and got 20. 6 mpg. Filled all the way to the top of the filler neck at the same pump. Computer said 21. 4 which is pretty close. This was a mix of highway, freeway, and city driving. The city driving cost me a mile or two per gallon. This was done with winter mix fuel. The trip started out at 7400' elevation and ended at 3000' or so with a lot of mountain driving in between. Speeds were between 60 and 70.

The truck: '01 ETH 3. 54 long bed quadcab 4x4
The mods: jardine 4" turbo back exhaust, ported hx40 16cm wastegate disabled custom true 4" out of turbo not 3 1/4",redneck down pipe,boost/pyro gauges, and the EZ box adding the fuel.

$1200. 00 = salty!!! OUCH!! thats hard on the old pocket book. Maybe I can sell some of these Longaberger baskets the old lady has stockpiled liked bread and water in a blizzard. If I do that I will need something to keep the truck warm, because thats where I will be living for a while until some baskets turn back up.
