Purpose of Plastic Door Liner?

OK, We just got nailed with rain yesterday in New Engand. I go to turn my wipers on and all I hear is the motor churning away while the blades sit still. I know what the problem is, it's those cheesy nylon bushings DC uses in the under the cowl transmission. I popped the first one from the motor itself. I thought about hitting the pick a part yard for replacements but those are already weathered. I really don't want to deal with this again so I went to the dealer. It's just under $15 for four of them (a full set). The counter guy thought he wouldn't find them (for what's that worth). Has anyone else done a different solution? Have other folks run into this problem too?

i had it happen at the wors time on my old '76, about 100 miles from home. went to a hardware store and got a plastic wire grommet with close enough dimentions and a spring clip, when the rain let up i fixed it quick, not another drop the whole way home...

Every 1st gen body i have ever owned has done this. Thats just one of those things you know you will have to fix. I think the sun is the hardest on them. Randy

NAPA has them and it isn't near that much for the set. Dodge has been using those things for the last thirty years.

Napa has them packages of two, you have four total. I just did the ones in my crew cab. Might as well replace all four, cause you'll see the other three that haven't broken yet will look bad. I think I paid about $2 per package. Remove each linkage 'rod'. Press the new bushings into the metal linkage rods. I used a socket and bench vise. It's much easier to get them in this way. Then when I used a big set of pliers to securely push/press the bushing/rod onto the truck end.

Edit: wiper linkage bushing NAPA part number 665-1537, found on the turn-rack where all the odd and end parts are- door handles, choke cables etc.

Ya, know........

I thought that this would be one of those PIA items or should I say personality quirks of our trucks. I should have gone to napa.

Thanks to everyone.
