wiring for pusher pump

I am thinking about putting a pusher pump before the factory lift pump and have a question. can I cut the signal wire to the factory lift pump amd hook it to the control input on a relay then run a wire from the ground side of the control to the factory lift pump (basically run the control side of the relay in series with the factory pump). the run the other side of the relay conventionally for the pusher pump. will this work? I am under the impression that the relay does not add any load the factory system so it shouldn't overload the system, am I right?
