Durango RV ?

towing 5th wheel with 35s and 4" lift

I have a question regarding a factory installed tow package that I had installed on my new truck when I bought it. Does the wiring for the trailer or camper plug have a relay or some kind of devise to keep from running down the battery in the tow vehicle, when you are using the trailer or slide in camper? I used to have a ford with a factory installed tow package and it was it had something in the wiring that prevented you from running down your battery. I bought a new Dodge Ram with the tow package and recently loaded my slide in camper on it and to my surprise found out that by plugging it into my plug that was factory installed, ran my battery down in my truck, after burning some lights, pumping water etc etc. Can anyone tell me if this wiring harness has the capability to perform like the factory installed harness did with the Ford truck? Is there something that I can install to prevent this problem on my new truck? Any information will be appreciated.

No, the Dodge trailer tow option wiring harness does not have a battery isolation relay as standard equipment. This means the +12VDC connection at the Pollack 7-pin connector is hot at all times and that leaving the RV plugged in can draw down the truck's batteries.

It's easy enough to add a battery isolation relay. These are available at most RV dealers/service facilities and use a switched ignition power source to connect or disconnect the trailer battery charge circuit in the truck's wiring harness.

Thanks RustyJC for the reply. Can you please tell me how to wire this isolator repay up without screwing something up in my wiring harness?

I left the factory circuit breaker powering the brake controller, and added additional circuit breaker and constant rated solenoid for switching the power to the trailer charge lead when the engine is running. Brought the new power source right from the drivers side battery. Found and cut the charge lead at the firewall near the master cylinder. SNOKING
