Electric Brake Controller

Need a Boat Delivered - Hotshots???

I did a search but didn't find out for sure what I need to know.

I will be borrowing a fifth wheel from my Dad for a short trip next week. I will be using his brake controller on a temporary basis. He has a Kelsey Energizer. I understand that the White wire is Ground, the Black is 12V from battery, Blue goes to the trailer brakes and Red is the brake input from the brake switch??

As far as my truck wiring goes, I don't have a clue. I need to know where I can find the trailer brake wire under the dash and where to connect the Red wire. I understand there is an open connector for connecting brake controllers (which I have located) but don't know what wire is what. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a 98. 5 2500, short bed, quad cab, W/manual transmission.

Thanks

I got the towing package with my '99. This included a harness (4 pin connector w/open end wires) that plugged in to a port under the dash. These get connected right to the wires on the brake controller. I think your best bet would be to buy this adaptor from a stealer. Then you don't have to cut-in to the factory wiring, and it can be easily/cleanly removed when you're done.

BTW, it is important to follow the wire labels, not the colors (colors were wrong:rolleyes: )

If you have a brake controller plug under your dash to the left of the steering column, your truck should have come with a brake controller pigtail that has a mating plug on one end and 4 wires coming out of the plug. Each of these wires should be labeled by function. If you don't have this pigtail, you can get a replacement at your dealer; trailer hitch dealers also have them, but make sure these aftermarket pigtails are labeled for wire function either on the wires or in the instructions.

Now, to install the brake controller, just match up and splice the controller and pigtail wires by FUNCTION, NOT by color. This is critical as the pigtail wiring color coding conventions don't match many (if any) brake controller wiring color coding conventions.
