So i bought a truck and have found a few issues. While taking care of another i found this. Its the wiring going to the trailer hook up connection. Can anyone tell me if theres an issue or should i just tape it all together and not worry about it. Im not very good at electrical work and would appreciate any input. Havent had any luck finding a wiring diagram.....if anyone has one please send it to me.

The first picture shows the bundle going to the trailer hook up and it has 4 wires that go to nothing.

The second picture shows the yellow wire from the first going up and over the frame rail to the driver rear lights. It also shows the white wire cut and taped to the outer sleeve. Its hard to see but in the bundle on the left theres a yellow wire thats cut.

The third picture shows where the yellow wire from the second pictures ties into the driver rear lights.

Think you are wise in being concerned. That is classic Southern Engineering. What type trailer connector does this all end up in, flat four or 7 pin? What year is the truck? You can buy a plug and play adapter for most vehicles that eliminates cutting into existing wires. bg

I wonder what year as well, almost looks like a tail light feed quit to the trailer from a bad relay (or TIPM) and they jumped it from the truck's taillight or vice versa.....

I believe the white wire taped to the harness is for camper shell install, perhaps CHMSL light for the shell.

The truck is an 06 mega cab, whats weird about the wiring is it all looks stock. It goes to a plug that plugs into the 7 pin connector. Also, i believe i have a bad relay or TIPM for my passenger side blinker light. Still trying to figure that out as well.

Some one may have plugged a trailer into the truck that had a short circuit and tripped the TIPM. It is my understanding that it can be reset one time, I think that is a dealer item. bg

This may be easier to follow, these are the wire colors and functions at the rear of the truck where the chassis harness connector plugs into the 7 way connector...

On my ‘05 1500 I have both a bumper mounted 7 pin and a flat 4 hanging. Maybe someone cut off the flat 4 connector?
Yep, my 05 has a corroded 4 pin as well as the 7 pin. One of these days I get to cutting off the 4 pin and properly sealing the wire ends.

Big Red, wiring diagram pages 8W-01-2 through 8W-01-4 have descriptions of the symbols used on the wiring diagrams (best to read the entire 8W-01 section). Of all the wiring diagrams I've dealt with automotive are the hardest to follow. It would be nice if they offered them in a cad format where entire circuits can be on the same page and printed out on a D or E sized sheet like many industrial electrical wiring diagrams are done.

My '06 is in winter storage up the road but I could get a picture of my factory harness with the seven and four pin connectors in place Saturday if that would help.

Funny, at lunch I went out and took a picture and then realized it may not be as helpful since there are non stock items. Might as well post it I guess. The orange lines are the non stock items. On the left is the aftermarket pigtail for a replacement 7 pin in the bumper. On a stock truck the factory connector plugs directly in to the 7 pin in the bumper. The orange stripe on the right if for the stop light in the cap.

You’re probably okay to wrap the wires up but first those loose wires need a four prong female plug installed on them. Might be easier to install all new wires with plug. Then wrap. All connections should be soldered and sealed. Never use those blue crimp connectors for permanent connection. Do you know how to test the wires?
The new plug should be set up in this order: GTLR. The odd one is ground, next is taillights, then left turn and finally right turn. I hope this helps. Herb
