I am installing some 50 watt halogen back up lights. I want to tap the wire from the cargo light switch and the wire that powers the reverse lamps tie these together then go through the fire wall to a relay mounted in the engine compartment can anyone tell me what color the hot wire is leaving cargo light switch? Also does the wire that powers the reverse lamps come out of the transmision as it did in my 1st gen. 5 speed or does it come from the gear selector and where and what color is it? I am hoping to tap this wire under the dash if it comes from the gear selector. I would like to thank you in advance for your help. (I sure wish I had run an extra wire or two through the loom when I installed the power tailgate lock hind sight=20/20 foresight=blind as bat :( )

It's interesting: I can't locate the proper pinouts from the dimmer switch for the Cargo lamps in my manual. Page 8W-40-3 shows the headlamp switch cluster, but fails to indicate the wire for the cargo lamp. Page 8W-80-43 (cargo lamp connector) indicates the cargo lamp signal is a 20 ga. PK/DB wire. Not sure if it remains that color all the way back to the headlight switch.

For the auto transmission the backup lamp signal comes from the transmission range sensor which is (apparently) mounted on the left side of the transmission. It's a 6-pin connector and the backup lamp wire is 18 ga. VT/BK wire.

Since the powertrain contol module receives gear selector position using a multiplexed signal and the backup lamp signal is separate, you should be able to tie these circuits together if you want without the PCM thinking you've put the vehicle in reverse every time you turn on the cargo lamp. However, it also means that your cargo lamp will come on every time you put the vehicle in reverse (I think).

Ryan thanks for the info and your time. Im glad you pointed out that the cargo light would come on when in reverse I hadn't thought of that. My topper blocks the cargo light but it creates some glare and makes it difficult to see through the back windows. I will try the PK/DB wire at the dimmer switch and run a wire from the transmision range sensor to the engine compartment. Does PK/DB stand for pink/dark blue or pink/dark brown (sorry Im not very knowledgeable on electrical systems)also does anyone know if there is a relay made that will fire from two different input signals or maybe another way to make this work. Any input is greatly appreciated.

PK/DB means "Pink wire with dark blue stripe". ;)

There are double relays that can be used to fire 1 item from 2 different signals. I recommend this one.

I can help you out with a wiring diagram for this relay if you need it...
