Heres the story: A friend of mine is doing a Cummins repower of a 51 Chevy truck. He has a 180 HP 6BTA and is backing it with a NV4500.

What I am tying to figure out is what the three wires on what we are assuming is the tach sensor go to on a factory truck. The goal is to use the factory tach sendor, or is it an engine speed sensor for an auto, for an aftermarket tach.

I suppose I should just buy the factory service manual, but I would really appreciate some help.

The three wires go to the P. M. C. Powertrain Control Module. So you have to have that for the Tach. to work. The Tach. works off a Frequency not a Pulse.

Not sure what year you have there. In my 94 service manual the connections are as follows: (assuming you are talking about the engine speed sensor on the timing cover)

The wire oposite the flat on the plug gets an 8volt supply from pin 7 of the Powertrain Control Module II

The grey w/ black tracer is connected to pin 24 of the above

The black w/ light blue tracer is grounded

Hope that helps. Good luck with it.
