Planning trip late this year and am wondering best route to travel. Heard toll way in bad shape somewhere along the way. Has anyone gone the northern route like thru Canada? Just wondering about what would be a more pleasant & comfortable drive.

I-80/90 around the Windy is a mess with construction and so is the Skyway so there's no easy way around it. Once u clear there thought it's pretty much easy sailing the rest of the way. IN and OH pikes are good as is the 90 thru pa and into NY.

Randy,

We just got back from the east coast last night. The tolls are a real joy  - worth extra miles to avoid them - and there are interstates that are free. The roads are also terrible in spots - especially NY interstates. I've lost 3 trailer tires to NY interstates in the past 2 trips out there. As for Chicago, take 294 - it's much better than 94 through the city. I checked into the Canada route too. By my calculations, diesel is quite a bit higher up there, but that was my crude conversion math - gallons to litres and US to Canada exchange rate. It was none too cheap on my route either. It ranged from $1. 77 to $1. 98 - mostly on the higher side.

I know WM-300 just went from Schroon Lake to Iowa and back, he could probably tell you how he went and the shortest distances and the cheapest. It's been a while since I did it but I went up through Canada on the QE2 highway the last time I went to Chicago, it saves on tolls. If you end up taking all interstate to get there and go up I-87 to Placid give me a jingle I'm just off exit 18 a few miles. So later this year... going skiing?
