WIX oil filters

Everyone talks about using Fleetgaurd filters. Are they that good? How do they compair to WIX ? There is not a Fleetgaurd distributior close but there is for WIX. Any input on this would be nice as i am comming up on my first oil change. Thanks Blue

WIX "TRUCK" filters were the highest rated filters in independent testing in two catagories 1 Single Pass and 2 Weighted Average. I've got to do some digging to find the results but they were in the high 90 percentile range in both catagories. This includes top of the line Fram & Purolator. I don't remember seeing Fleetguard on the list and not a single auto manufacturers filter got to the 80% mark.

Hastings is one of the most respected brands in auto parts. Amsoil now carries their complete line of filters, in addition to their own.
Not all oil filters are equal. Cut several brands open, and you'll see what I mean. I don't wish to publicly knock one brand or another on this forum, everyone has an opinion when it comes to this.

I just order about 5 at a time from Geno's. If you get 5 or more, the difference between paying shipping and paying local sales tax is about a wash. Is WIX as good or better? Is Amsoil? I don't know. But I do know Fleetguard LF-3894 is both very good and what Cummins recommends.

Have any of you heard anything about Hastings filters? I have been using them for years and have had good luck on gasoline engines but I heard that the Cummins can colapse filters inside. I was told by a five star Dodge dealer (Frahm Dodge Norco CA. ) never to use Fram filters. He said at this time Fram is the only one they know of that has had problems on the Cummins. Thanks for the input.

The only time I use a cheap filter is when I'm converting a motor over to Amsoil, doing a motor flush, the filter is only on for 20 mins. And then I trash it.

Just because a product is expensive doesn't mean it's better. I've been useing Wix filters in tractors that cost four times more than a Dodge Cummins,one has over 12,000 hours on it, that figures to 600,000 miles,most all of it hard pulling. No oil related problems and oil tests always come back good. Think I should spend $2000+ per year for filters or $400 with those results?Not sure of the oil filters,but if you soak a Fleetguard fuel filter in solvent till the blue paint comes off guess what it says underneath?One guess. IMHO Fleetguard has you guys bent over a barrel and is giving it to you big time.

RoryTek has a valid point... why put cheap oil and cheap filters on such an expensive jewel like a Cummins diesel engine? Not me... mine gets treated to the finest that money can buy... Amsoil ! Got to save money? Save it elsewhere. Brownbag your lunch, quit smoking, cut back to 3 cases of beer a week.

Don't want to be the voice of negativity here but..... I received a call a few weeks ago from a friend that is a service tech for a local Dodge dealer. He knows I recently purchased my truck and intend on doing my own maintenance. His call was to warn me about using WIX oil filters in my 24 valve ISB. He did not elaborate much further other than to say they recently had an overall service department meeting that revealed reports of severe engine damage due to the WIX filter being installed. I told him I thought WIX were primarily used on tractors and some of the big rigs. He said he wasn't sure about that, but his advice was to refrain from using them on the ISB for my own sake. I asked him if he was trying to generate parts sales for his dealership (by me purchasing mopar/fleetguard filters) #ad
He said no, don't care where you buy your filters, just don't install the WIX. Have known this guy for a long time and respect his automotive knowledge. I will follow his advice and not temp fate #ad

David noted the dealer didn't have any details on "why". Is WIX good? Is Fleetguard good? Yes. BUT - When discussing "Fleetguard" filters, Fleetguard will caution you not to use certain Fleetguard filters like the LF-3552, or severe engine damage could result, and will recommend the LF-3894 instead. Some Cummins part-counter people are less knowledgable and only know 1/2 the story, a. k. a. , "use only Fleetguard". But we can't expect the Cummins/Fleetguard folks to spend time and $$$ to find out which WIX filters are OK and which WIX filters are not OK so that we can safely use their competitor's product. That's where the marketing boys kick in, and do like David's dealer "don't use WIX, only use Fleetguard". I would like it better if they told the full story and said "use only Fleetguard LF-3894". It scares me that even at a "Cummins" dealership, the filters are handed out by folks that don't know the full story and WILL, I repeat WILL, sell you the WRONG Fleetguard filter. Since I don't the resources to find out things like casing pressure ratings, max delta-P across filter, etc, like David I am going to play conservative and go with the LF-3894.

Wix filters are made by the same corporation that made you differential, Dana.
I think they have figured out how to make a good product by now.
I would use a Wix in a heartbeat over a lot of filters on the market.
Don't believe your local parts pusher all the time. They do have reason to badmouth other manufacturers parts.

which WIX filter (part number) should be used on the 2001. 5's... ? And how much are you paying for them?

Sorry, I had just typed in the address as part of the sentence. This being the time of year for farm shows in my neck of the woods, I was looking through some literature and came across that site. I had remembered someone questioning you where you got that discount but could not find the post.

I am going to call them during normal business hours to see what I can set up. Don't have near the toys to buy filters for that you do though!
