On occasion with he truck in park it simply does nothing when the key is rotated to start position. So when that happens I place it in neutral and it starts every time. This is how it's been since I bought it 5 years ago.

Mechanic said it was an internal transmission issue. Thoughts???

I think @NIsaacs is on to something. If you are having to shift gears to get it to start, the linkage needs to be adjusted. Does this seem to happen when the truck is parked on an incline or level? Had a similar problem back in the day on a '67 Mustang. Needed to wiggle the shifter from time to time to get it started. Fixed that when I had to pull trans and repair. When it went back in, the linkage adjustments done fixed it! Also could be the shift cable bushing at the trans. Mine wouldn't want to come out of park a few times when on an incline, looked under truck and found the bushing almost off of the trans! Sometimes it's the simple things. Good luck with repair!
