Help!! My 2003 manual transmission with 40K miles will not start ... sometimes. Truck has been perfect up until about 2 weeks ago, when it intermittently will not start. When it happens, the truck is completely dead, electrically, except for the red "security light" on the dash, which is usually on steady, but sometimes blinks. Sometimes I get a "rasping" sound under the hood when the key is turned to start; sometimes, it's total silence, and all that happens is that the security light dims. Sometimes, it seems to clear itself if I wait a while (not sure), but it always clears if I disconnect both batteries (disconnect switches) and reconnect them. It kind of acts like dead/weak batteries, but they are only 6 months old (Interstate), and if they are dead, why would temporally disconnecting them solve the problem (until the next time)? It seems like the problem is worst when it is coldest. It has never failed to start in the heated garage (update, today it would not start in the garage either), but yesterday failed 4 times straight in sub-freezing weather. Could the grid heaters be aggravating weak batteries? There is another less significant problem, which may or may not be related. The idle speed intermittently hangs up at around 1,000 rpm with the clutch depressed. I can live with that, but not the "no start" problem, which I fear is about to result in my having the truck towed to the dealer (shudder!). Any help would be much appreciated!!!
