Truck starts fine when it's been sitting overnight or all day, but if I drive somewhere and shut it off, then try to start it again, it just turns over. Won't start after the engine has been ran for a little while. Now, if i open the valve that's on the fuel filter and start it that way, then it starts right up. I thought it was the fuel filter, but I changed it and that didn't help. A friend told me it might be the injector pump. Any answers you guys could give me would be a lifesaver. Thanks.

It sure sounds like an injection pump.

They also don't like pressure when cranking, especially when hot. That might be why it starts when you let the pressure out of the filter housing. The lift pump shouldn't run when the engine is cranking.

Do you have a fuel pressure gauge?

oops, bob got here first.

that is a good point. a lot of pushers wired straight to the battery will do this, too.

I don't have a pusher pump, it's all stock. I tried to put my truck details on the bottom, but haven't figured it out yet. I've tried but they never show up when i post a thread. No pressure guage. I don't understand why it will start just fine when i open the drain valve to start it. A guy told me it relieves pressure off of the injector pump having to work so hard, then it starts. But i don't know if thats true. Could it maybe be air in my fuel lines. When i changed the filter, i don't think i properly bled the air out of the line when priming it. But I've had this hard starting problem for a while. Thanks guys.

check for codes

check for codes in the odomoter readout by cycling the key (without starting) on, off, on, off, leave on. n let us know what you find.

Good news, and bad news. I went through the same issue in January. There is a printed circuit board on the top of the VP44. When the pump and board heats up, the poor solder connections break. When it cools off, the connections make contact again. The board cannot be purchased or replaced, the option is replace pump and it will come with the newer upgraded PC board.

Email me and I can tell you where to get a great deal on a pump without even having to pay a core charge.

Good luck.

did the key 3 times, gave a "P done" I looked in the service manuals, didn't find anything. I've ordered an injector pump, going to go pick it up in a couple of hours.

Good luck with the VP44. I feel really lucky to have gotten 209,000 miles from my pump, and only put 2 lift pumps in. Still fuel system is running stock.

Mine did the same thing when new. There is a TSB on this. You should have a dealer check to see if your truck has the newer software before you install a new pump. Worth checking anyway.

What is TSB? To DC Mille, the VP44 I bought has the revised circuit board. The mechanic I talked to replaced all of the VP44's in Fedex's trucks at the shop here in angleton, they use the 5. 9 cummins, he said since then, 2 years ago, he has only replaced 5 of them, thats out of i think 20 trucks, not bad anyways, and they use the hell out of thier trucks. My truck has 133K on the counter and I hope I get a lot out of this pump. R Young, is the newer software on the trucks computer or on the pump? Thanks for ya'lls help. I appreciate it.

its the injection pump. Just change it and you won't have anymore problems. The ve pumps do the same thing. Its a ploblem with all rotary pumps. Doesn't start when it get hot, change the pump.

Well, got it all done. Runs like a champ and starts at every bump of the key. Thanks to ya'lls help. Bled the lines and did everything by the book. Altogether time after running here and there to get different tools it probably took me about 5 hours put together, but spread out, about a day! But I'm happy with the results of how it went for being a first timer, only having the truck 4 months, I went from a small import to a huge truck, and don't regret it a bit. Thanks yal!
