Lately I have been bombing around in an old military truck, a 1985 Chevy 1 1/4 ton with a 6. 2 diesel. It has nothing nice about it, but it really likes to go four wheeling. Saves my Dodge a load of wasted miles and a lots of paint chips, besides, it saves me a load of change as I cannot stand to have the Dodge dirty. I think it has to come home clean every time we go someplace. Bugs are not so bad, but any mud in the fenders has to be washed out.
The Chevy is much better off the road. My Dodge is so stiff in the frame and strong sprung that it just hangs one wheel in the air when the nose goes down in a ditch or hole. I did not buy a locking rear axle, if I was to order one, that is a must have! I will probably have to put a limited slip of some sort in soon. The old Chevy has locking axles in both ends and the frame is not nearly as stiff. The 6. 2 is a real turd, but with 4. 56 gears, who cares? Fuel mileage is almost identical, only 60 mph seems to be flat screaming in the Chevy.
I chipped the Dodge with an Edge EZ. It always ran up over 100 fairly easily. For about three weeks it would run 115, since then it shuts down at 106 like many folks on the register advised it would. It will flat smoke up to 106 now, it is really kind of scary to think of the energy a 7000 pound plus vehicle makes at 106 mph! I never drive it very far that fast as I would surely hate to get caught!
I would have to say that this is far and away the nicest driving and most forgiving pickup I ever drove. The big torque and big brakes are just fantastic! Towing is a real dream, just set the cruise and let her go. It has always sat right on the cruise, no matter what the load or hill. Kansas is relatively flat, but we do have a few hills around. I normally drive around 73 and it just goes to work. Gotta love a truck like that! Sorry to hear about the payments, keep hammering that lottery though! If I hit it, I'll pay off yours too. Glen
