just curious of yalls opinions. is there any particular brand to avoid ? I just bought a 04.5 cummins with a 6 speed and it came with the banks IQ and econonminder installed. truck has 129,000 mi and previous owner had just had all 6 injectors replaced . (leaking/over full oil condition)
just got me to wondering if it could have been programer related or simply bad luck ?

The Banks is an ok unit, most will tell you to use HP tuners or Smarty, most also don't like Edge,
however on my truck the Smarty S06 wasn't worth a darn, no matter the tunes i chose. and the Edge is great. get better filtration for the injectors, and keep the tuner till your ready for a better one.

OEM makes a great add on filter, it's also cheaper than most aftermarket options. Put one on my truck, it's an excellent kit. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B007TXEPWK/ref=ya_aw_oh_bia_dp?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I would be careful believing the Amazon ad. When you look up the instructions for the kit it references a replacement filter 68083826aa. An article in TDR had that filter as a "25 micron at 97%". If TDR is correct it just pulls out the big chunks. http://cdn.genosgarage.com/downloads/TechPDF/TDR77_03andup-FuelFilters.pdf

What takes out the injectors in not having a better than 7um filter. Factory is a 7um and some of the after market replacements are 10-12um. For best filtering from stock housing you want a Baldwin PF7977 which is a 5um then you can also do a 2um CAT between the stocker and the CP3.

More than likely the previous owner was running after marcket filters like a WIX which are only 10um filters and severely shorten injector life.

It's not an Amazon ad, it's the OEM official kit the dealership could install if you ask. In fact had to have the programming done there to enable the second water in fuel sensor after I installed it. I have already replaced the original filter with a Mann filter. The fact the new trucks have 2 filters from the factory is telling.

The TDR article said it was $450... When I bought mine it was about $100, now it's a mere $76.. pretty reasonable for what comes in the kit. I'll see if I can find the specs for the MANN filter..

Agreed is reasonable price. Just don't run it without a pf7977 in the stock location with the included filter. I have a Baldwin 10um on mine to balance between the two filters.

I don't like Edge, BD, and Banks.

Banks does okay but runs more rail pressure than I like which can lead to shortened injector life.

I'm a bit biased but there isn't much that can touch a custom UDC Pro tune, or HP tuners thou I use UDC. EFI is an option for 06+ trucks but the last I looked they don't have all the tables that UDC Pro does.

The OEM 2nd fuel filter is a B20 option that is mainly to remove additional water from bio fuels. I have the original kit on my truck but I also have an additional filter after the OEM filter. The best OEM filtration for the 3rd gens is 7um, which isn't quite enough IMHO. I run the Severe Duty filter into the OEM canister that has a 5µ Baldwin and then into either a 3µ Donaldson or a 3µ FF5814 Fleetguard.

The newer B20 kit sucks, IMHO, as it uses an oddball filter size.

thanks yall for all the replies. I do apprecieate it. I'm pretty familiar with the fords but this is my first dodge, and it looks like i'll be running a baldwin fuel filter for now and eventually adding an aditional fuel filter to the system. thanks.

Donaldson has a 5 micron filter also.. https://catalog.donaldson.com/productDetail/en/A/P550908?productId=41689&skuId=s73572
, Amsoil sells these. The OEM second filter kit is indeed a "prefilter" and has a rather large micron rating, even the MANN replacement, though specs were hard to come by.. That said, stopping the big stuff before the original filter will still help considerably, my last filter change the original filter looked clean (unlike the prior change without the pre-filter) with the pre-filter clearly doing most of the work..

Good suggestion on the 2 um CAT filter, found a filter housing and the CAT filter on Amazon to put such a filter to put between the stock filter and CP3. Also will put a 5 um in the stock location until I get that custom install done, the added frame mount will continue to get the big stuff and any additional water..

The cat 2µ filter is actually rated at 4µ. The Donaldson P551313 and Fleetguard FF5814 are both 3µ filters.

Could this be adapted to a 03 Cummins?
Probably.. it has fittings to adapt into the stainless steel fuel line, a section gets cut out, I think it was 3/8". You may have to drill and tap mount holes on the frame. The water in fuel sensor would need to be figured out, and it has a relay and connection to existing fuel heating circuit, not sure what is there on an 03 to connect to, but if you are pretty mechanically inclined, it's doable. It's a great value compared to other options.
