The eng. oil dipstick broke the other day. So I went to the "STEALER" today to get a new one. I approached the partsperson, and inquired as to the cost. :--) was what I must have looked like when I heard $55. 00. So,then he said that he would give me a discount. $45. :--) was the new total. With tax yet to come. . Well needless to say, despite the season, sugarplums were not what was dancing in my mind during this episode. Then I went off to ask the service writer if it was covered under warrenty. He immediately commenced to tell me that they had to draw the line somewhere, and that this was probably after the line. I then said something to the effect that I had spent a large volume of money on the extended warrenty, and that "HE SHOULD CHECK"!!! And I said ,continuing on, that, $45. 00 for a "EXPLETIVE" "dipstick" was a bit extreme!!!:-{} . Anyway, as it turns out, it was covered. And since I had to get some other work done, I scheduled an appointment.

Then as a favor to the members of the TDR. I stopped at the Cummins dealer to check on their price. $16. 75Oo. This all took place in Minot N. D.

Probably would have been cheaper to take the broken one to a jeweler, have it silver soldered with diamond inlaid in the handle. ;)

A question....

How in the heck does one manage to break their engine oil dipstick? :confused: Enquiring minds want to know! Oo. Oo.

how to break the stick

I guess that it had to be weakened where the roll pin is put through the plastic where it is attached to the metal. That is where it broke. All I did was to pull it out to check the oil, and, it just fell apart in my hands. It must be somewhat a common thing, because the parts-person told me about a few other occurances, and thats why he keeps at least 3 on hand:)

I broke mine while installing a aftermarket intake and bending the dipstick to match the hole. The two piece ones are not near as strong as the one piece units on earlier models. Why did they have to change. :confused:

lucky

One of the guys said that I was one of the lucky ones. Some have it break off and the stick stays in the tube. then you have to take off the tube, just to get it out. :{
