I know this has been ask a bunch, but,To purchase a road tractor or a medium size, with a 48-53' trailer and haul trailers, travel trailers, 2-3 each or the box trailers. And save run in miles to the destination. Can money be made doing this? As was stated in a previous post we would use a low profile trailer to get the center of gravity down closer to the road etc. What do you guys think????????????????????

Marv.

I have a few guys that are hauling horse trailers for me. Make sure you have a back haul because if they dont then the profit drops big time. Depending on where you are coming from, it is better to just buy a 1 ton and drive with doubles or a large single.

Thanks much for your reply. So the pay would be double if two were pulled? I guess, and how often does both unit go to the same consignee?? If they expect you to make 500 miles a day, you can not just dilly-dally-a-round. Is it profitable the way you are doing it?? And how maney drivers do you have working for you? I understand the dead head.

My son is doing over the road now and he see's these type of units and wants to put some on the road. So we are asking questions to make the dessision.

Texas to CA takes them 2 days, but they dont mess around either. I just work with one company, cant think of the name at the moment. The pay seems good but that is only comparing it from the trip that I made. Doubles usually cost more because they have to take a different route unless they cross new mexico at night. New Mexico and Arizona always give them hell with that stuff. Out of Idaho I have some guys that have semis and they haul trailers out for us and then they go south to Merced, take pipe(?) to Vegas and back home. They just stick to that triangle. They only get 6-7 miles/gal where the truck gets at the least 13-14 and 20-21 maybe even higher empty. Not sure if it a profitable but I know it would be a busy business.

Oh I forgot, most trailers I order for a load, a gooseneck that is short I will order a bumper pull to go with it or the big LQs just go by themselves.

You attach a coupler for the bumper pull? is there holes already on the gooseneck trailer for this? or you have to drill? I have seen this combo also two goosenecks with a converter dooly. these of course are further up north like I 70 and I 80. I can under stand the problems, but are the patrols just hassling you with question as to length? and I guess permits.

Marv.

Most of the time they are over length is the problem. The holes have to be drilled but it might take 2 hours to throw on a hitch and 30 minutes to take it off. On board air is nice at that moment!
