General Motors plans to equip 1. 7 million of its 2009 models with a system that allows OnStar operators to cut engine power in the car if the police request it. The system was demonstrated in Washington, D. C. today.

GM's OnStar system already contains built-in GPS tracking that would allow police to find any OnStar-equipped vehicle. With the new technology, if the police request it, an OnStar operator will inform the occupants of the vehicle and then cut power. The engine will be slowed to idle speed, to allow the driver to move to the side of the road. Brakes and other electrical functions of the vehicle will still work.

The intent of the system is to cut down on the number of police chases, which can be dangerous for both bystanders and police. A recent study showed that from 1994 through 2002, there were 2,654 crashes involving 3,965 vehicles and 3,146 fatalities during police pursuits.

The idea for this capability was showcased recently in science fiction author Greg Bear's book Quantico. In the novel, a near-future story about biotech and the war on terror, police could use Cop Block to stop a car or truck in its tracks.

"... When the truck's driver ignored his lights and siren and the trucks failed to respond to Cop Block, the patrolman became aware he might have a situation... "

All cars and trucks in the U. S. were now required to have Cop Block. A patrol car could radio a coded signal that slowed and then shut down the engine.

GM also stated that the owner of the vehicle may opt out of the service upon request. GM's research has indicated that 95% of current OnStar subscribers would like to participate.

We can stop cars from outer space*, but we can't track illegal aliens that land at JFK Airport.

*I thought GM vehicles ceased to function on their on accord, I didn't think they needed the Death Star to do this.

I have always thought that a police chase could be ended with a . 50 bullet through the hood. I believe the coast guard does it to smugglers boats in the ocean. If they can do all they say with Onstar just imagine what else they can or allready doing with out you knowing.

I do not like big brother watching, PERIOD. Say NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO. Suffice to say I will not be buying a new gm onstar product. not to mention another unnessary part that has the potential to go wrong.

I read that to disable Onstar most thieves just snap-off the antenna on the roof, I imagine without the antenna they would have a hard time stopping it. I am assuming the info I heard about the roof mounted antenna is true also, I don't have a GM so I don't know personally.

My brother is active in the USCG, and yes... they do fire rounds across (through) the bow of any errant vessel that refuses to stop. If the vessel still does not stop, subsequent rounds might not be as selective.

Back on the subject, I dislike the idea of "Big Brother" controlling/monitoring my vehicle and no, I probably would not own anything with OnStar. However, I did want to add that vehicles equipped with OnStar are blatantly obvious to identify and they needn't be connected or activated if owners choose to disable the system.

I'd hate to think that a CEL (Check Engine Light) would be triggered if OnStar is unplugged/dysfunctional...

Sooner or later they will be able to track your mileage and then TAX you for how many miles you drive. Sad that they have the technology to do this but yet they cant make a truck that gets more than 20 mpg. Hmmmmm.

I don't think you'll have a choice before long... big brother is demanding we give up all our freedoms one at a time... right now most cell phones can be tracked and even turned on remotely without your knowledge so that while I'm pretty sure you'll be able to turn the OnStar system off someone at a remote location will be able to turn it back on... 1984

I hafve also heard they are working on getting it so if something emmisions related goes wrong, you get a letter in the mail stating you have x days to fix or get a ticket. Oh well, I was more serious than I thought when I told my wife I would never want a new truck:-laf:-laf:-laf:-laf
