I just ordered a set of Bridgestone M/T's which I am concerned about putting on my stock 6. 5" chrome rim... many say I can do it o. k. ? I would like to purchase a set of 16x8 aftermarket rims such as the MT classic II's or Amer. Racing chrome steels.

Chrome steel is easy to take care of but I have been advised that the chrome steel rims will rust unlike the stock ones. What type of work is involved with the MT Classic II's?? Do they require polishing to keep from pitting, etc?? I can't afford to buy Alcoas or Welds or anything that will cost me my marriage!!:D:D

Any suggestions for an inexpensive but easy to care for rim?

Thanks!:)

Any wheel that you get that is polished and not chrome will require periodic buffing. It's not bad maybe a couple times a year depending on what kind of conditions you drive in (mud, salt, etc. ) Get the wheels you will like them. Goodluck Kevin

If I were you, I would stay away from American Racing Chrome. I have a set and am very displeased with them. Two of them rusted over the summer right after I got them. They did replace them under warranty, but if I had it to do all over I like the Alcoa Monster Rims or the Mickey's would be good.

I bought MT Classic II rims from Summit. They cracked around the lug nut holes within 500 miles. I sent them back and Summit gave me a refund without any problem. I would not recommend them. :(

I then bought American Racing Atlas Chrome over aluminum rims and I am totally happy with them. I've had them for almost 2 years, no rust and very little effort to keep the looking great! :D :D Oo.

Polished aluminum is too much work! IMO  :--)

I have had both chrome & alum rims on personal trucks & work trucks. The chrome rims all cracked at the lug holes. But then again these trucks were loaded to the max GVW. The alum (alcoa) held up better. No problems. I also noticed that the ready mix concrete trucks(most but not all) (80,000 GVW) have Alcoa rims. The chrome rims take as much work (IMO) to keep clean.

Good Luck on your decision.

Do not be fooled! The Mickey Thompson Classic II's are not made by Alcoa! Mickey Thompson has contracted another manufacture to make them. :( They are a cast wheel, which is not as strong as the Alcoa Forged wheels. :(

Here are some posts about the M/T Classic II, some I have posted in, some I have not.

I hope this helps. :)

Thanks BigBob

I knew the Classic II's were not made by M/T or Alcoa but, I thought that the lug nut holes had inserts for strength?

I will probably stay away from them after reading those posts. It looks like I will stick with my stock 6. 5" chrome steels for now... . I just hope I don't have problems putting a 285 Mud Terrain tires on them. The tires will go on tomorrow unless someone chimes in here and says not to do it.

Wheels make my head spin...

Challenger-II,

I'm in the same boat. I'd like to go to a 16x8 rim to confidently run bigger tires, but the more I research the more I like my stock chrome rims. The stock 16x6. 5 steel rim is rated for 3054 lbs. , seems to take moderate abuse well, and is easy to keep clean. If I ever do go up to a 16x8, I feel like M/T Classics, Challengers, or Weld SSs are really the only way to go since they are the only ones that publish weight ratings at or over 3000 lbs. Obviously, there is a reason anybody in the know will tell you to only look at forged wheels... they work, last, and are safe. As you know, you pay a premium for all that stuff. Looking at forged wheel prices makes it easier to consider 19. 5" rims, but then you see the tire prices. I suppose they last a lot longer, but still, it would be around $2k for a set and that's without a spare! I'm pretty sure I'll go with the 255/85R16D next time. Have you looked at that size? Supposed to be the same height as a 285/75, just narrower. Good luck.

Clinton,

Yes... I thought about the 255's, but fellow members have successfully run 285's on a 6. 5" rim and since the wider tire looks better, I am inclined to try it. I love the stock chrome steel. It cleans up great and not a lick of rust! I wish it was wider. I am driving myself and everyone near me nuts over what to buy. I dont want to spend a fortune and have to polish them every month!:{ I thought I had found a good choice with the American Racing chrome steel wheels, but I have been told they will easily rust. Good luck with your decision too!:)

Hey Big Bob, are the A/r Atlas wheels cast or forged under that chrome? I imagine they're cast and was also wondering if you know the weight capacity of them?

Powder Coat

I went with black powder coated steel Daytona Style rims with chrome center caps, nuts and valve stem. Not for the cost but for the fact that I don't have to worry about salt and other road garbage messing em up too bad. I like em and actually get quite a few compliments on the way they look.

Take it easy

I am almost positive the are cast. They have a 3100# rating. They not only look good almost all the time, but they are really easy to clean.

I just ordered Nitto Terra Grappler 305/70R16's to mount on them! Oo. Oo.

It's just the M/TClassic II's that are cast, and they have a 3300 lb rating. The M/T Classics and Challengers are forged by Alcoa and are rated at 3000 for the same size wheel. 16x8 w/ 8" x 6- 1/2" lugs. They say the forged wheels are 4 times stronger than cast, SO how come they have a lower rating? Hmmmmm... .

Anyway... ... I have the M/T Challengers on my truck, and I like them. Been on for over a year now, washed maybe twice. Still shine pretty good. No cracks anywhere, BUT the aluminum center caps are a total joke, cannot even put them in the new wheels without scratching them, I threw mine in the trash last month... ... Go for the chrome steel caps if you decide to buy.....

My honest . 02

Hutchew,

My post was only referring to the M/T Classic II's. As far as the ratings, I can't tell you. After seeing the way the Classic II's cracked around the lug nut holes, I would not trust them with any weight at all.

I know many people with the Challengers, all are very happy with them with no problems. I do know one person that had a problem with Alcoa wheel. See thread:

Alcoa Wheels

Oh, yeah, I knew that...............

I was more just pointing out that the classic II's had a higher weight rating, but MT's website states the forged wheels are 4 times stronger, but have a lower weight rating. That doesn't make much sense, does it?
