Went to my local dealer to get the upgrade on the TSB for the white smoke/ fuel mileage/ overhead calibration. They wouldn't do unless it had the white smoke symptoms saying it was considered service and opening them up to the "lemon law". They are pretty tough on the dealers here. I just wanted it to increase my gas mileage, plus the overhead is off by 1-3 mpg . He asked why I knew so much and I told I subscribe to TDR and recommended that they should so they wouldn't have to reinvent the wheel. Has anybody else had this problem in Ca. ?

I just got mine reflashed a couple of weeks ago. The dealer(service rep) didnt want to do it and said that I may get worst miliage. I am getting so bad now that it couldnt get much worst. Anyway< after showing him a copy of the TSB they went ahead and did it. I havent driven much sence but will be towing my trailer for a long haul in a couple of weeks. I'll let you know

my folks took my truck in to the eugene oregon dealer when i was in iraq for me. i copied the info from here and E-mailed it to my folks for the door seal TSB and the white smoke TSB. they printed it out and took it to the dealership. the dealership then printed out a list of 4 or 5 TSB's that my truck were needed and did them. also replaced the wipres at no cost...

What is the TSB number for this? I took my truck to the dealer to get the overhead corrected cause it is off 1-3 mpg and the richard head at the dealer gives me a copy of a print out that says how it is calculated. I think its a page out of the owners manual. That did not make me very happy. So if anyone has the number then I can give it to the dealer and get it done and see if it makes it better.

White smoke, engine stumble/misfire, or flat spot in engine performance.

This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with a Cummins Turbo Diesel engine (sales code ETH) with an engine serial number 57130285 through and including 57149668 and the engine date of manufacture 12/10/2003 through and including 2/2/2004. The vehicle operator may describe:

White smoke during no-load engine acceleration between 2800 and 3000 rpm.

Engine stumble/misfire or flat spot during moderate accelerations between 1500 and 2500 rpm. May be accompanied by white smoke.

During cold ambient temperatures (30° or below) white smoke and/or engine stumble when engine is started after an extended cold soak.

During cold ambient temperatures (30° or below) white smoke when restarting engine that has not yet reached normal operating temperature.

If the vehicle operator describes or the technician experiences the problem, perform the repair procedure which involves erasing and reprogramming the Cummins ECM with new software.

If the TSB applies to the vehicle most dealers JUST DO IT. They get paid. Chezz. We use to pull TSB's on vehicles in for service(like a 30k or what not) and do a slew of them. Customers were always like CHEZZ thanks!(open recalls also which is SUPPOSE to be checked on EVERY vehicle coming into the service dept)

This is the wrong TSB... Here's the one you want, 18-037-04

There is a funny thing and you need to watch some of the dealers that you take your truck to, I took mine back to Kellogg and they did the TSB but also said that I did have a bad injector and they wanted the truck for 2 weeks so they could fix it but the TSB gave me about 1-1. 5 better economy and my trip computer was fixed and the white smoke was mellowed out.

Took the truck to the local dealer they said they replaced the injector and did the TSB but I lost my millage and the trip computer went back to being all screwed up, about a month ago took it to Kellogg for something and the flashed it again and it fixed everything so I think that some dealers do something wrong...

Bert,

Thanks for posting that TSB. I just bought my 05 a couple of weeks ago. It must have been on the lot for a while because the date on my engine is 8-4-04. I'm only on my second tank of fuel and it has been warm so I haven't noticed any of the problems noted in the TSB. I'm going to call my dealer on Monday and see if they will update the ECM anyway.

Thanks again!

Ray

I wasn't aware that a dealer had the option not to do a TSB. If a dealer is gun shy regarding legal troubles I would stay clear. I can undersand however their warning a customer of previous results and asking you to sign a disclaimer on the service tag.

FWIW I had mine done a few months back, and It worked great. Never did have the white smoke issue, but I did pick up close to 2 MPG both on the overhead and hand calculated.

Bottom line-Try another dealer.

Good luck,

Greg
