I took my truck in this past Wednesday to have the dealer look at a weeping front pinion seal and slight power steering leak. I got a call later that day saying they found metal shavings in the PS reservoir and that the PS pump and steering gear box would be replaced under my extended warranty. I have 68K miles on truck now.

Does anyone know what the metal shavings are all about? Was there a silent recall for this? - I think I remember reading on here about a year ago that several people had the same parts replaced?

I am pretty sure if I wanted to put bigger tires on my truck, say 305's or even 315's I suspect that the old PS pump and steering gear would have kept up with no problem.

however I do not know if this new PS pump and steering gear box is going to hold up - it seems very tight to me and barely able to keep up with the stock 265's I have on there now.

The new steering gear assembly looks slightly smaller then the old one - the part numbers off the side of the steering gear are as follows:

(T) NS3266A2547 and (P) 52106835AF. Is it possible they installed a steering gear box for a 1500 4x4? Or is it one size fits all deals?

maybe I just need to drive it more then 30 miles to see if it is going to loosen up a bit.
