Just driving along today and she made a gawd awful noise and

quit. No shavings/particles on the dipstick, no leaks on puddles

nothing out the exhaust, starter still cranks, fan spins while

cranking and free wheels when you manually move it, but the

starter whines at a higher pitch. Are we looking at the KDP gone

thru the motor? Pump gone? or am I just worried for nuthin. HELP!

Sounds like a lack of fuel. Loosen an injector line and crank to check for fuel. If no fuel, remove fuel solenoid and check again. Still no fuel open bleeder and check lift pump operation. If fuel comes from lift pump, but not from injector pump, injector pump probably needs work. Good luck and keep us informed, any questions, just ask!

If it was the KDP then 9 outta 10 times you'll have a big puddle of oil or at least be able to see the hemorrhage.

It almost sounds like the flex plate is fubar... I don't see a signature so I'm assuming you have an auto. .

Either that or you've bagged the starter... or the flywheel gear is gone. If it sounds like a higher pitch on the starter, I'd pull the inspection plate off the bottom and have a look at the flywheel condition..... I don't have a stick so I assume you can do that... ;)

> Check for fuel at the injectors as noted, good plan.

> Give the gear casing all around the crank harmonic ballancer a good eyeball... . look for cracks/oil, alum out of place etc.

When this happened did you feel a change in the "pull" of the truck,,, I mean did it seem to just make noise and die with no other symptoms like throttling down??

Did it feel like any drivetrain parts let go??

Do you see ANY fluid loss/leakage/weeping since the failure??

In the mean time, I'll call an emergency meeting of the congregation and we'll lay on some heavy prayer to the patron saint of acceleration for ya... .

Pastor bob.

So happy someone has an idea, Truck had a quarter tank and didnt sputter when she went down, the pump was replaced years ago before I bought it and was warrantied (that covers fuel).

As for the starter (now given I'm a shadetree gearhead, oilchanges and normal stuff I can master) it still turns and cranks.

No drive train problems, hell... the transmission back has been redone to like new status.

And she just made that wonderful symphony of noise and died out, nothing harsh or abrupt.

Shes a Getrag-5 speed if that helps.

As for the harmonic balancer... aint seen no musical instrument under that there hood... kiddin

 :p :p

Thanks for all your help guys, will keep you updated.

Pull the oil fill tube off the cover and verify the injection pump is turning consistently when you crank it. It almost sounds like the nose of the cam snapped off and the valves are not opening and closing correctly. The KDP could very well have dropped out and gone between the crank gear and cam gear without causing any damage to to the housing. Unfortunately it causes some other major damage to cam and pump drive.

Take off the #1 valve cover, watch the valves as someone rolls the engine over, see if they are still moving. If not, the cam is broke. My truck acted the same exact way and the timing bolts came loose, resulting in a broken cam. This is the easiest thing to check for before tearing anything apart.

Mechanic number one, who will remain unnamed, has decided that he will not go anywhere near the motor. He aslo lost alot of respect from me and all my business for not even attempting to do anything. Next stop MASSDIESEL when Scott gets ahold of me. Hoping its just a simple fix, but doubt it.

FYI if anyone is looking for a 1992 CTD, its for sale when it gets fixed (About $5000) unless you can diagnose it and fix yourself ($5,000 minus cost of repair).

Just aggravated... . love my CTD... but it will seriously be for sale soon.

Don't sell that truck too cheap. Mine was a 92 regular cab 5 speed. 200,000 miles broken cam, I sold it for $4250. Not to say that you will definately get this, but they are worth more than you think broke down. I was getting at least a call a day for 2 weeks, sometimes 3 or 4.
