Checked mine yesterday since I had the hood open looking to see what the dealership did to my truck (replaced the injector line to #6). WTF? 18,000 miles and it looks like someone shot tar up in my filter! It's really black, really caked. I haven't driven the truck anywhere I haven't taken my other trucks and cars and I can't believe how dirty this thing is at 18,000 miles. Have others seen this same thing?

18,000 miles? That's like DOUBLE the mileage I got out of mine! I tossed it at 10K, it was caked, and replaced it with the Amsoil version :)

I usually change my air filter every 3,000 or when I get the oil changed. I rodeo and am frequently in dirt dirt dirt! It is always in need of a change when the oil gets done. I guess there supposed to go every 6,000 but their relatively inexpensive so I just do it every 3,000

I am getting 15K out of mine but I blow it off at the 7500K oil change.

Vaughn thanks for the tip on drilling out my airbox I finally did it and added a 90º ABS street elbow to keep out the water and I noticed improved fuel economy and the filter minder no longer draws down to 35% after a WOT event.

I put an AFE PG7 Mangnum force on and still pull the filter minder down to the bottom. I've given up on that thing completely. The AFE does a great job cooling EGT's though.

I installed the Amsoil Oiled Foam air filter in mine at 8,500 miles. I now have 30,000 and the filter is still in the truck. I just sent in an oil sample, but have not received the results as of today, but I will let you know what my contamination levels are when I receive the report. Filter minder is still in the green area. (no numbers on the filter minder since replacing with the "new Version")

Put about 10k on mine before switching. I currently have a air aid system and am cocidering switching to AFE PG7. Also with both my stock and Airaid setup my filter minder has never moved. I'm guessing that it's not working.

Blowing dirt away

That is something I will never do! We went to a Bobcat seminar on filters and we learned. 1. Never even look at the filter--that is what your filter minder is for. 2. You are risking putting a hole in your filter if you blow it off and you are certain to get stuff in the wrong side of the media by doing so. 3. Diesel engines are more sensitive to dirt than gas motors. 4. Dirty filters filter finer stuff out than do brand new ones--again with the filter minder

The only one I even question is #3

Drilling advice?

Can somebody point me to Vaughn's drilling and elbowing advice?

Just rememember RobbieH you have run about as much air volume as a naturally engine would have at 35,000 miles and probalby a lot more. So you might want to check it much more often. One more thing with your investment, that 18,000 miles cost you about $6000 when you figure in the cost of the truck and fuel, ect. so a $40 air filter isn't really that bad on top of that.

Hey Scott,

I read somewhere that some of the early 03's had bad filter minders, maybe yours is one? Not sure if there was a TSB or not.

Air filters are supposed to get dirty. What's the alternative, let the oil catch it?

I think you misunderstood my point, but JungleDave got it.

I was saying it seems to be really dirty really fast, not "duh it got dirty". And the black in it, I'm still curious why it looks like I drove through an oil storm.
