I am looking at getting those 55 gal drum filters. Has anyone used them? And what is the filter system of choice to get down to 5 micron or so on a large scale. I just got a bunch of oil pickup locations and a 2k gallon storage tank. Oo.

I just got a source for WVO and will have to filter it also. I am currently filtering it by hand in 5 gallon buckets which id a PITA! I am considering building a refining system. Anyone know anything about these things? I can get around 20-30 gallons of WVO a week and want to use it in all my/my company's trucks and equipment.

Most of the contamination I've found in my oil is fairly large micron, so I'm able to filter it pretty well with a couple layers of shop rags then 2 layers of blue shop paper towels. I don't know what effective micron level this filters it to, but I can run about 40-50 gallons of WVO through before the rags start clogging up.

With this method the fuel filters in my truck last 10,000 miles.

Do you simply filter the oil and pour it right in the truck fuel tank? I have done this on my '96 for a while now. Fuel filter appears to be cleaner than with pure diesel. I have been hesitant to mix anything in the '03 o5 the Liberty. I have put as much as 10 gallons of WVO in the tank with the rest as diesel. I have also been running waste engine oil in similar concentrations. Neither have decreased power or increased smoke. There is the "something cooking" smell coming from the exhaust with the WVO.

Are you running straight, "untreated" WVO? If so, how much concentration of it can you run? I really don't want to buy or set up one of these "refining" contraptions if I do not have to. I know that is necessary to run "B100", but how about blends?

I use waste corn oil from a tortilla factory. I use a filter head i got from a farm supply localy. And then I put a large oil type fuel filter on that. Then when I pick up the totes i pump the oil out of the tote into barrels through the filter. Then I filter again when I fill the transfer tank. Then let the engine filter do the rest. I run a 50/50 mix of #2/oil.

I know its not scientific and people have asked what micron I filter to. I dont have the answers. But it works for me.

I bought 55 gallon barrel filters and a blue filter houseing for CJ Hall. They where a good price and he has been alot of help. So that is where I am with filtering now.

WVO should be filtered to around 5 micron this is a good starting place it is hard to filter Cool Oil if the oil is warm it filters good, warm is 90 to 110 degs. the hotter the oil the better it flows. try not to filter above 160 degs with 55 gallon drum filters they will not last in high temp oil. thining the oil with heat or with fuel is the best way to filter the oil.



let the oil set for some time before trying to filter this will rid the oil of water it will sink to the bottom of the tank use the top oil and stay away from the bottom oil (you can settle the botom oil in small batches and get more oil from it) you will end up with nothing but the white goo after a few months of doing this.



the next time I start to filter some cloudy oil I will take pictures and get a good time line of how it is done and what it takes time wise to do it.

I've done that when the weather is quite warm (highs in the 90s and above) but anything cooler than that I mix it per CJ Hall's DSE recipe to thin it down (mixture of kerosene, gasoline, DFA and CJ's recipe). I've run up to about 60% WVO in the summer, down to about 35% WVO blend and 65% diesel. Weather has cooled to well below average lately, low 60s compared to normal of mid 70s.

So, besides good filtering, is there anything else necessary to run around a 30-50% blend of oil/diesel? I have seen these "biodiesel contraptions" and if it is not necessary, I don't want to waste my money on it. I just ordered a 20 gpm pump to transfer the oil from the 55 gallon plastic drum I set at the restaurant to another drum on my truck. I will then filter it at my shop before use. Currently I have been putting in simply filtered WVO in 5-10 gallon batches in my '96. Do I need to do anything further? I am happy with performance. The engine runs quieter and smokes less. Power is about the same. Does a WVO blend affect a computerized engine such as my Liberty and '03 common rail? Does it perform fine in the first generation engines with lower injection pressures? I know they do not like used engine oil, which I have no problem running in my '96.

Thanks for all the help. Now that I have a second (REALLY GOOD) source for WVO, I want to fully utilize it in the most economical way.

The oil is clear oil nonhydrognated oil the if you blend with kero/gas/powerservice/mock dse additive then yes you can run it in the 03 or the jeep crd.



The Jeep need to have a sensor unpluged I think around 75% blend in that truck will work just fine. I can find out for you on both of these issues



The 03 dodge is a lot like my 04 and it should be happy with 100 % blend fuel.



There are some mods you might need if you run it in the cold weather. or you can just blend it with some #2 in the winter time.



The post I started dse in trucks 04/05 ctd has a lot of info on blending. it has all the problems I have had and what I did to fix them.

Using used cooking oil with just minimal filtering ?

I had a recently had a conversation with a traveling food vendor who let his oil sit 5to6 weeks, filtered it , and in the tank it goes. He said he had no problems with his truck ,which was a ford 7. 3 litre motor . this is the rig he uses to pull his concession stand. I thought you had to go through the process to use this oil. Any input would be appreciated. Robert

it sounds like he might be using a two tank system on the ford. I have a friend that blends #2 with wvo and then runs it in a ford but he cant go much over 50 % veg before he has problems starting it. in the winter under 45degs he cant run it at all.



do you have any other info?
