where can a guy get methanol?

I have found a couple of restaurants that are willing to give me there WVO (Soy oil). Where is a good source to purchase 12VDC pumps and hoses? I am going to setup a couple tanks in a small trailer I own to use as my collection method. I was planning on using my trailer connections as the source to power the pump? I am trying to locate a pump so I can determine if the wire and current I can supply with the hitch will be able to run the pump.

I was hoping to find some type of screened end to put on the hose to limit large materials from being pumped into tank.

Any one have similar setups that can share their lessons learned?

Thanks, Jeff

I found a small gear pump at a garage sale with a 1/3 hp electric motor--$5. 00. It is direct drive but works too hard for WVO , it need to be speed reduced. It works fine for the fuel.

But, it is 110 volt, I just bought on E-bay a 24 volt motor pump set-up, hoping this will work. The I'll just charge 2 12 volt batteries and go pump some WVO!!

You can go to a farm supply store and get a suction screen and adapt it.

ok here ya go This is how i do it http://www.biodieselcommunity.org/oilcollectiontank/

I tried the refrigrator compressor on the suction side it works pretty well, however it is 110 volt. So i went to the junkyard and got a vac pump off a caddy, it is under the battery box on the drivers side. it is 12 volt and will pull my blatter tank down to 20 inch lbs in 5 minutes and it will suck a bout 40 gallons of wvo out of a barrell in 5-10 minutes and if i run out of vac i have the pump mounted t0 the frame and just hook up the hose and flip a toggle sw and it is running again. when you get home i just hook the blatter to my air supply in the shop and blow the wvo into a barrell and im done hope this helps Dirk

i just purchased a pump from jmesales.com. found them on ebay, and bought some other components direct because their prices are better, right from their site.

bought the "farm pro" 12v pump setup. has the larger 1" hose setup. this baby pumps like crazy. hose is a little stiff but it really doesn't matter when filling a 55 gal drum.

i have an older and more expensive fil-rite that is exactly the same casting, control, wiring box and pump. farm pro was significantly less money.

i also looked for some screen device for the pickup tube but have not been able to find anything. i was thinking about getting a well pump intake filter and then wrap it with some window screen. figured that would do pretty good. just not sure how long it would take to clog it.

needless to say, when pumping from one of those oil dumpsters, draw off from somewhere in the middle. don't set it on the bottom.

This is the one I got. Though the ad doesn't show it, it comes with 13 ft of heavy hose, a screen filter for the pick-up end, and a nozzle, pretty much like the one BPINE bought.

I've only tested it pumping some petrol diesel, but it seems to work pretty well. It's a heavy pump and motor so it seems like it will last.

CJ I tried to reply to your e mail but AOL said it was no good, I hope you read this.

Howdy CJ, The pump is pretty whimpy but does work well in Ca. I have pumped about 700 gallons so far and it is working out great but time will tell if it make the long haul. For the price is is worth a try in my book, it is on sale right now if you want to give it a try.

Well I am going to try the Northern tool pump. Looks real close to the Harbortool unit.

If I end up doing this long time I think I will purchase a 1" trash pump that runs with an engine and install it right on my trailer.

Any good sources for 55 gallon plastic drums? I have see ebkcontainers online but have not got any shipping prices. The drums don't seem that expensive but I am thinking they will be costly to ship. I am going to try some farm and tractor shops around me first.

Thanks for all the great feedback. Jeff

Jeff,

Check with your large, local car washes. They get their chemicals in poly drums. Nowadays, at least around here, they've gone to 30 gal drums. But look at one they are using and see if there is the name of the distributor of the chemicals on the drum. If you're lucky, that distributor may be close. Contact them for customers of theirs that may buy products in 55 gal drums and see if you can then contact those customers. On the other hand, the chemical distributor may have empty drums on hand as they may service some of their customers and collect the drums. That's what I found. The local distributor had about 10 drums in the back, clean, ready to go, and FREE!

How will it be retreiving the oil when it's COLD out...

Right now, the places I have been getting oil from are putting it in 5 gal pails and the original plastic jugs the new oil comes in. I have supplied the 5 gal pails. Got them at Home Depot, have nice snap lids and won't spill if they tip over...

pickin up WVO

Ok, I have been doing this WVO/ Biodiesel for over 2 yrs now, so I have been thru my share of pumps. I would not even waste my money on a 12vdc pump. They are too slow and will not hold up unless you spend some big money to get a very large commercial sized one. I have the 18gal 120vac diesel transfer pump from Northern Tool, this works great until the temps drop below 45F. For wintertime I will still use this pump and also put the tank in my truck under a vacuum with a refrigeration vacuum pump. I run both the transfer pump and the vacuum pump on a 3000 watt inverter that I have hardwired to the batteries. I also use the vacuum to remove the water from my collection tank, if I happen to get any, while I drive down the road. In the summertime while the oil is hot, I can dewater it on my way home and it is ready to go into the processor right away. No water, no soap. Oo.

Dieseltim :D

Hey Diesel Tim can you elaborate on using your vacuum pump for dewatering.

Also I gave up on my buddies wanting cone bottoms so I welded the bottom half of a Weber Barbeque to the bottom of my 55 gallon drum. So far it is working great.

Thanks Blair
