WVO usage and observations

Switch over valve

So, I can buy filtered WVO from a local source for about $1. 20 per gallon (good quality, bulk, rated quality, from a bio diesel place). With that price, and the fact that I drive about 40k miles a year, I could save about $3000 per year. I could offset the price of a WVO conversion in a year.

I think I am comfortable with the mechanics of injecting the oil (two tanks, heater, heated lines, etc). However, I con't seem to find and reliable info on tuning the truck for WVO. Does anybody have a program that could be put on to a smarty (or similar) so the vehicle runs properly on the WVO?

Ideally, a programmer with a diesel / WVO switch, so I could run well on diesel when I am away from my WVO source.

Suggestions?

switching fuel from #2 to WVO should not require a programing change. It is not like switching a gas motor to alcohol. You may notice a decrease in fuel economy and maybe a little down on power depending on the base stock.

vo and tuning

what works for me is a smarty running on #5 or #6 this way the vo runs good and when you dont have vo to run will the diesel runs good also yes you will notice a drop in power but the box brings it back what you will find is that once the oil hits 160 degrees it will run likeits running #2 but watch the temp the ip does not like really hot oil.

I would put a 200 gallon vo tank in the back of the truck this way you should be able to go 2800 miles on one fill up :) AT 14 MPG

A tank 4' x 8' x 10 " would be 199. 48 gallons

A tank 4' x 6' x 10 " would be 149. 61 gallons!!!! where could theses fit in a pickup truck?

I run an Edge EZ, and that's it. When I first converted the truck, I didn't have anything on it. The truck will run just fine in WVO without any tuning.

I settle, filter and blend my WVO myself, then blend 50% with diesel. No problems with any of my vehicles/equipment. I do run the mix more like 30-40% WVO in Winter, but only to aid in cold starts.

fuel for thought

sure running vo in the engine works just fine with no box (stock) and blending it at 50/50 works great also.

it just runs better with a performance box added thats it. run it stock it will be fine.

L Schulz, what has your experience been with running WVO in the 24 valve? I've heard lots about how it may be detrimental to the VP44, any drops in fuel pressure or if you accidentaly put too high of a viscosity (ie too cold) of WVO through it that could be bad... Thanks.
