WVO tuning

Test vehicle 1998 12 valve. BHAF and 370 injestors. 60 gal transfer flow in bed.

I've been using WVO filtered to approx 5 microns for about 200 miles now.

I dont know what type of oil it is, but it's clear, water free oil.

I filtered it through a piece of denim material then straight to the transfer flow it goes. :-laf

It's been hot here, no it's been REAL HOT the last few weeks.

I dont switch to the TF until the engine is fully warmed.

I've gone about 500 miles on WVO. I did change all filters just after I started using it. I also pulle the sock filter out of the TF tank. What a mess. It made a HUGE difference having that one clean. :D

At first it was a bit sluggish. I attibute this to the sock in the TF. I at first added 5 gals of diesel to "thin it out" but after pulling the sock I saw why it wouldnt flow sufficiently. :-laf

I now got some 1 micron and 25 micron filter bags. You can get them from McMaster-carr.com.

I also got some bendable aluminum tubing to put a heat coil in the TF tank.

Sorry if my typing is a bit messed up. The puter has been crappin the bed latley.

wvo and filtering

Hello Eric

I for one understand using waste vegetable oil as a fuel. what I don't understand is why everyone that starts out running wvo uses jeans (denim material)to filter the oil even the bag filter you have is better then that but again it has issues too.

I started with whole house filters they failed swiched to bag flters in a housing the way they are ment to be used it works great but you have to pass the oil thru them more than once this takes time to get to 5 micron.

Changed to using a centrifuge to filter the oil also is slow but WOW it is clean. yes I use the bag filters and the centrifuge and I will till I don't make my own fuel AFTER I DIE .

Yesterday (not bragging) but I made 350 gallons of fuel with this system I have, started the oil in the centrifuge at 12 Oclock sunday and had 240 gallons of oil 24 hrs later. 250 Gallons to the farmer at 5. 00 pm monday and 87 gallons later last night and I was running the centrifuge still this moring I turned the unit off and had 120 gallons of oil ready to make in to fuel.

To night it starts all over again and by thursday night I will have 350 gallons of oil.

filtering is the biggest issue with running wvo as a fuel.

hope this helps.

Denim

I was doing some searcing on how to filter this economically.

I came across the denim idea on one of the boards that popped up.

It was brought up ,and they concluded that denim was "good to" about 5 microns.

I bought some aluminum bendable tubing, and plan on addng a heatcoil to the TF tank soon.

The oil gets to 140deg from just bing in the sunlight.

I have more to post on this, but my puter is crapping the bed again. #@$%!

Good first start there Patriot. I think what the oil is like to begin with has a bearing on how much it needs filtered. I'd love to filter mine like CJ but I don't have the space, equipment or time. I've done fine filtering through layers of cloth rags and two layers of the blue shop paper towels available at auto parts stores. Mine is a small operation, just enough at a time to do ~20 gallons for each fillup. I've not had a fuel filter clog yet, change every 10,000 miles, but a 12-valve is a little more forgiving when it comes to fuel filters.

How does one go about getting WVO? Just talk to the manager at McD or where ever? I'll soon have the space for a storage tank and I'd like to start on this. Probly more for warmer months though. Can you keep it from turning into crisco grease at -10*?

I get mine from a local place I frequent about 1/2 mile from my house.

Theyre pretty happy they dont have to pay Mopac or Darling to remove it, and I'm happy to take it for them.

This place I get mine from owns 3 or 4 other local places. I'm sure once he sees how I'm on top of things, so to speak, Ill be setting up drums there too.

I've gotten about 60 gallons from this one place in the last 5 weeks or so.

Right now it's too time consuming to really need more.

Once I get all set up with the 2 pumps I have with the bag filters I can do more faster. :D

In the last couple days I put about 400 miles on it with WVO. 80 MPH with the 9K lb TT (not to mention the added wind from a storm)and it shows no apparent difference from dino diesel fuel. :p

No problem what so ever. The primary screen will be pulled in the next few days just to confirm the cleanliness of the WVO. :D

I burnt about 40 gals in the 400 miles, but I aint easy on her. :D

You got the right idea getting oil from a favorite restaurant, better then messing with the big chains, they don't care. WVO has less energy per unit volume so expect 10 to 20 percent less mileage, but the price cant be beat, nor the lovely french fry exhaust. Smells like money!

runnung veggie oil

love to hear about other pople running wvo in their ctd's. i've got about 500 miles on wvo with my 2000 24valve now and everything works great. keeping fuel pressure between 12 and 17. i run a single tank with about 5 gal of diesel and 30 of wvo, in winter i'll go to 10 diesel. i ran my gmc for 2 years this same way, made sure the vp44 would have sufficient pressue with the wvo and put some heat in the lines and filter and was ready to veg. love that exhaust

I wish I knew how to post a video from my cell phone. I recorded my truck on the dyno. Best of 340 horsepower and 830 lb/ft torque on 50% waste vegetable fryer oil/50% diesel.

not very wintery

it usually only freezes a few times a winter here, although last year it stayed about 35 all day and when i got off work()no block heater there) it could take a bit to start but after a minute it ran fine. that was on the 6. 5 with this i'll make provisions to keep it heated. i don't know how it is for long term wear, i've heard stories but so far i'm good. i'll probably use more diesel in winter with the dodge, i'm still a little leary of the vp44's rep. bob

???

CJ how many times do you suppose the oil needs to pass through the bags for it to be "clean"?

I've been giving it 12 hours minimum. Normally closer to 24 hrs. This is with one of those harbor freight 330 GPM pumps. I usually do 25-35 gals at a time.

Is 12 hrs over doing it a bit for 30 gals?

The bag is starting to get there, I'll probibally change it tomorrow.

Oh BTW I dump it in a 25 micron filter before it goes round and round in the 1 micron setup.

filtering

eric

the 12 hr of filtering is great

if you pass the oil thru the bag at 5. 5 gpm thats 330 gph

the pump you have will do that with water not with oil so lets say it's at 2. 75gpm or 165 gph in 12 hrs you have pumped 1980 gallons of oil .

the filter bag unit that I use will handle 55 gpm clear water at 1 psi the oil flow thru there harder say about 1/2 the flow so 27. 5 gallons at this rate the oil has passed thru the bag 72 times

the oil must go thru the filter 30 times to become clean thay way the filter works is that you get 50 % of the rated micron on the first pass the next pass you will get 50% of the remaining 50% and so on thirty times thru and its at the rated micron.

6 hr of filtering will do just fine but a filter person told me once that its almost impossable it over filter a product but really easy to under filter one.

hope this helps you

8k on WVO. I blew up a VP44 early in the process, but there was lots leading up to that, more than just the fuel. It had been run for who knows how many miles with a dead lift pump before I got it and put gauges on it, and I also popped a HIH and sent a good dose of water through. Anyway, I figured things out, and its running strong now.

Centrifuge setup is a good idea to get the water out. Not solid water but the water that the contaminants are keeping in the oil. . I filter down to 10 micron. then centrifuge it. it gets really clean by then. . the last step i do is cold gravity filter it hrough a Frantz (toilet paper roll filter) just to polish it off.

Can't be too clean for my old truck!... ... .

Centrifuges are pricey, but they're a very effective method of cleaning your oil. With a few passes, the Dieselcraft ones will spin out anything down to about 0. 5 microns. They are also very good at dewatering - if the oil you send into them is hot, the jets in the rotor will have a flash evaporation effect. When it's up to speed, you can see the water vapor coming out if you're starting with wet oil.
