Anyone else's headlamp lenses turning yellow or fading? Anyone have any ideas on how to clean/fix (besides replacement)?

I tried using some rubbing compound but that did not work very well.

Thanks,

Try plastic windshield polish like for a motorcycle.

Avoid the use of amonia based cleaners (like windex and such) on plastic parts.

My 97 are really yellow.

And I now see my 01 is getting yellow too. I tryed running a buffer on my 97 before and couldnt really clean them up. :{

Check the threads on sportlights . I use to turn my lights on and off to make sure they were on. The sportlights

are one of the best things I have done. Upgrade the wires also.

Headlight warehouse has them.

When you get new lenses, go here

It is like the plastic covers that genos sells but not rigid and it is able to take a rock at 60 mph and not crack the lense. you have to go in the site and find out the dealer near you that does it. you can either have them install it for you or you can buy it by the foot a roll of it in different widths. They do hood leading edges and spoilers and rocker panels like our side doors and rear quarters that get dinged.

To help clear and remove oxidation from all headlights going south, meaning not being able to see out of them, use Mothers Mag & Aluminum wheel polish. Once to apply it and rub it around it will remove all the oxidation from the headlights on the outside. Then simply use a high quality plastic polish to seal them up. A regular regiment of applying a good plastic polish afterwards will help keep them like new.

Now,as I know your all thinking I am nuts and off my rocker(which if ya ask Shovelhead here,he'll tell ya I am)BUT,this is something I seen at a Mothers dealers meeting and it does work... ... . Andy

p. s. -Ask Shovelhead if he ever seen any discoloration on my headlights at all. Mine are done a couple times a year like that. I'd bet he'll tell you you need a pair of welding goggles to look at my truck... :D :D :D

Yellow residue history!

Well here is the update (and final results). Tried some plexiglas cleaner did not work very well. Looking at the suggestion above by HEMI-Dart I decided I would try my Dremel tool with a small polishing wheel and some jewlers rouge (SP?). My advise is DO NOT use a polishing wheel it (even when used gently) will leave marks on the lens even from a slight bit of pressure and heat from the friction.

While looking around for something else to try I found some Flitz metal polish and fiberglass cleaner that I use on some of my handguns. Decided what the heck and gave that a try. It worked like a champ. Afraid to try the polishing wheel with this stuff either I decided elbow grease is best. Took about 10 min. per side and they look a lot better. While working the Flitz in small circles on the lenses you could see a yellow nicotine looking residue on the cloth. Give Flitz a try, I think you will be satisfied.

:D

Flitz is AMAZING stuff, but you should be forwarned that is real expen$ive. As in about $30 for a small can. I have seen it remove heat marks from a torch on stainless steel and severe corrosion from aluminum. It works really well and is a great product though. Just use it sparingly:eek: !

Go with the sportlights, those stockers should have been recalled. On a rainy night when they were clear and working well you couldn't see the light on the road. It is not only the lens that gets burned out , the reflector is deteriorating also. If you go into the search forum ,you will see that everyone that put them in was amazed at how intense they were, and a low buck mod at that.
