I'm looking for a convenient place to hook up my gauge lights so they will dim with the instrument cluster. I've seen references to tying into the tan or orange wires on the headlamp switch. I have the wiring diagrams. If I read them correctly, the only way you are protected by the 5 amp fuse in that circuit is by tying into the 22 gauge orange wire? Otherwise, you bypass that fuse and go directly to the gauge lamps and ground. I'm a little reluctant to pop off the instrument cluster because I'm afraid of damaging/breaking the plastic. Can I tap into the ground side of the fuse at the junction block? Would it be that bad if I tapped into the ashtray lamp?

Greeting's get a fuse extender from your local part's supply and tap into fuse #5. I am assuming you have a 2nd Gen. By doing this you will have instrument light control over your gauges.

What 6naline01 said. Get one of these:

Replace fuse #5 with this. You now have a fused circuit for your gauge lights that dims with your dash lights. Works like a charm.

I used the ash tray lamp wire to hook my guage lights up many years ago and it works fine, never a problem.

Just picked up the circuit adder that Glen and 6nalineol recommended. $16 +/- at NAPA. While I was there I priced a new exhaust system. They only carry OEM, but it was 1/2 to 2/3 of the price the dealer wanted. .
