Ok, I broke the nut loose from the yoke. . Now, I am having all kinds of trouble to get the seal out of there... What is the trick?? I am about to have to go to work, so I will check this when I get home later on. . Someone please chime in though!!
You can get under one of the edges with a sharp chisel and push an edge up. Then grab that edge with a pair of vice grips really tight and pull and lever that seal out. You will porbably have to try it a couple of times to get it out because they are in there pretty tight. Try not to mess up the housing where the seal goes because that will mess up the seal between the seal and the housing when you put the new one in. If you do nick the housing smooth it out with a file being real careful not to get any chips into the outer pinion bearing. I would stuff a rag in there so that nothing gets into it. Or you could put a screw into the seal after you push and edge over so that the screw goes into both layers and pull on that with the vice grips. Good luck.
I just drilled a small hole in the seal and screwed a sheet metal screw in it, then used a nail bar and popped it right out. Wipe out any metal shavings before you install the new seal.
I feel that with drilling into the seal uneccesary debris is dropped into the outer pinion bearing. Using a sharp punch instead of a drill bit will insure that debris is not dropped into the bearing.
There are HOOK type seal pullers that make quick work of the removal task or you can use a large screwdriver to pry it out from the id. No drilling no debris.
