Thanks, TDR Staff

can you do this ?

Makes me want to go out and buy some pig/beef/chicken/eggs/milk from the store. People are killing themselves and DONT CARE. Not only Consumer Reports but most of the Fed food and drug commissions say that you should be buying something different

So Consumer Reports recommends buying pork raised without antibiotics and ractopamine. And it's important to cook pork thoroughly to kill any possible bacteria.

Very true BIG.

The reason I never touch a cream puff to this day is that one of the nuns in the second grade at the catholic school I went to would tell us that if you ate a lot cream puffs, we'd turn into one.

I just dont know the wife and I pretty much eat what we want and have no weight problems. Its the sedentary lifestyle that most lead that get one into trouble. But we DO WATCH what we buy it makes you wonder what's in the food you eat, HELL I cant even say half the words in the stuff much less know if its bad for you. Its all about the money the faster the animals grow the more money they can make selling them good or bad.

Hey BIG. Thanks for the reminder. It's not easy at all to get the right stuff in the big city. It seems TRADER JOES has the best stuff at the moment. When we head out to a place like Lancaster pa and hit a Weis market, we see better choices. They do their best to keep us poisoned.

Even big cities have farmer markets we use to go to several of them when we lived in CA. they had them in different cities on different days. There is always a choice its just convenience that usually makes the choice of us.

They call em green markets here. Seasonal and green cause its mostly that. Only meat farmer is one turkey dude from downtown Trenton nj. Lol.

We hope to not have to go away from home to get much, if anything in the near future the Wife's greenhouse is doing quite well she has some veggies that are spouting in the winter that are summer only and thats if you start them early. Any meat we eat is raised on our place our eggs from our egg layers and for SIL's cafe 50 hen's add's up to a BUNCH OF CRAP but you cant beat the taste of the eggs separate breed for eating chickens, pigs, beef Daughter said it like a zoo here.

Like the news story said and I did some follow up reading the production of our food sources health is in question. If you take the Governments A-OK For anything!!! then I guess its ok but I dont trust them as far as I can kick them. Same thing with our water supply from the well got quality report from the state and its good water!!! I still put in a filter system and thinking about adding more this use to be a mining area and some of the old ways of mining practices WERE NOT SO GOOD.

You're outline above and your food resources is why id like to bug out to a rural area I described. I often thought doing veggies. How big is the greenhouse? And how many people does it satisfy?
Are you saying the gov said your water is ok but your testing said otherwise?

The greenhouse is 20ft x 30ft right now its more in the TRY AND GROW FOOD IN THE WINTER STAGE the wife grows a bunch of different herbs (I grow only 1 kind :-laf ) she has been growing cool weather crops kale, lettuce, cabbage and a bunch of others that I dont know their names only how they taste. Some where on site I posted a greenhouse warmer that I made for her greenhouse it uses the TONS of manure that is produced around the place to produce Methane ran it in black iron pipe to Colman propane stove heads and can make the greenhouse a constant 64* and soil temp about the same for free!!! I think I could make it MUCH HOTTER if I were to use more CHICKEN manure with 50 hen's there is plenty of that but the problem is you have to bring it on slowly it throws off the chemistry of the process and will kill the system so its a process in the works. She's hoping to feed all of the family's veggie needs during our spring summer fall and at least some of it for the winter time. She had me till 2 acres of land fenced it off to all unwanted guest's and till in manure and other things to bring the soil up to what she wants by next spring so next spring she can take out already started plants to set in garden to make it that much faster and maybe get 2 harvests from most of the veggies. I told her I dont care what she grows just as long as I get my TOMATOS there is nothing better with some of her cottage cheese that she makes from our cow, or the cornbread and buttermilk it's a meal in its self. As much as im into the mules and mountains she's into the garden and making of food. Its really amazing what you DONT know how it's made and with what and not all that difficult to do its all just steps in the same process to get different things.

The water well is fine by the standards of the county and state of MT its me that wants it better. Many people around here have wells and have no problems but there are some chemicals that are naturally occurring and some not that are in the water that WE CHOOSE NOT TO HAVE IN OUR WATER so we filter them OUT.

Big, thats a great bit of info there. It must be nice to have the resources to even entertain the thought of getting it done... The one thing we do have here, and what I'll miss when I leave is the water system. A sustaining Garden not happening for me. Lucky if I can commit 15 square, and it faces NNE and the house blocks most of the sun. I'm finding it a challenge to get good meat to eat...

Wife did allot of gardenig in containers when in CA. where we lived the soil was just sand and rock really it would have taken truck fulls of soil amendments to get it the way she wanted it. So she did container gardens and raised bed gardens. Worked out fine Plus she could move them out of the full sun it was like 100 + degrees for sometimes days or weeks. You would be surprised how much you can get into a galvanized tub or water trough she used half wine barrels also.

Please go easy on me. . This is gonna sound asinine- but is that drinkable right there? I really don't know! Is the pasteurizing and all for shelf life? Is there any skimming etc?
I've done container tomatoes and such. It's actually my Son that pushes to do a big scale garden. . So I go out in the shed and pull out the tools. The pushing stops  Maybe I'll try again in '13

Ya its drinkable just as it sits but it would be PRETTY THICK. :-laf I have been a drinker of raw milk for years and if you watch what your doing there will be nothing to worry about, some think otherwise.

The reason I say Pretty thick is that our cow is Brown Swiss they have a higher butter fat content than most cows. The wife needs that for most of her cooking she lets it separate and then skims the butter fat or cream off. We like it! there is PLENTY of things that are gone with pasteurisation that are good for us. The ice cream I make puts the commercial ones to shame (its a vice I cant live without) Butter is another thing that I cant do without
