Beginner's Luck?

If so, did you build anything to set in the gutter?

I've just been putting a piece of fire wood in the gutter. Been thinking of a more robust / helpful ramp. Thinking of making a stack, consisting of a 2x8 or 2x10 on the bottom, then a 2x6, then a 2x4. The curb is 5" high ... that ought to be about right.

Figure if I made them about 4' long & stacked them right, that would provide a better ramp.

What are you using?

thanks

Just a little bit of that ample tq at idle wurks for me and my 6 speed. Trailer is about 13K lbs.

I do wish there was a 2wd low range kit available for these trucks. That would be way easier.

You got that right. I use 4WD Low because I've got to back across the grass, up hill! Off-idle torque is incredible, low range or not. Reverse in the 5 speed is too fast in high range.

The last truck was a modified 460, auto ... not even the same game. :D

Getting it over the curb is easy, just want to make it easier on the 5'er suspension.

I have a 9" high curb in front of my house and I back my 29' Sandpiper 5th wheel over it without using blocks or ramps. I just watch my mirror and ease back till the tire just touches the curb then ease the clutch out. Does not hurt the trailer at all. My yard slopes downhill to the back so the trailer does almost touch the back of the bed as the front wheels of the truck roll into the gutter but that is the only issue.

Forrest,

I use a ramp made from 1 1/8" plywood to level my fiver at the curb while we are loading it so I can turn on the frig. I just cut the pieces gradually smaller to make a ramp that is about 6" high.

I did see a couple of the plastic ramps in the paper today, they are rated at 12K and were $19. 00 bucks for the pair! May go to something like these so I can put both trailer tires on them rather than just the one with the ramp I built. ( the added bonus is I won't have to worry about the hernia factor with the plastic ramps, this wood thing weighs a ton! )

I use my leveling 2x12 that are 18in long to build a step,by useing 1 less board to get up on the curb. It is true they are not needed because the truck can push the trailer up,but I don't want to take a chance of damageing a tire. The wooden blocks are there in the truck bed any way why not use them? Our 38ft 5th wheel only rides on 4 G rated tires so if one gets damaged I am stuck. Walmart does not carrie them. I am like you a couple mins now will save Hours or days down the road. Also it keeps the rear bumber and dump valves, rear jacks higher off the ground.

Lets see if these post.

Used 2x2, 2x4 & 2x12. The handles work well too.

Now I just need to Verathane the pi$$ out of them.

Forrest,

I know what you are trying to say... Nothing like putting 10,000 Lbs on a 7,000Lb axle...

I've bent my share of stuff backing my Dad's trailer over big bumps... Ramps would have kept the maintainence bills lower...

Your ramp looks pretty good Forrest, *I* would probably shorten the bottom board a couple inches,, but that would be more for looks than function...

Merrick

Agreed Merrick. I was after pressure treated stuff & couldn't find any decent stock. The stuff they had was warped. :-{} Could have made a couple stops, but said heck with it ... too darn hot here.

Anywho ... the top 2x4 on one of them went south. Just a piece split & came off. I didn't really look @ the 2x4 stock I had laying around. Some of that well seasoned stuff. :( Short of carving ramps out of a solid piece ... which could be done with the chain saw & a RR tie, I'll just have to mod them here & there.

The 5'er sure comes off the curb more stable now though. Oo. I live on a corner & the rig doesn't come off "square" & really use to rock side to side. Fixed!

Forrest

Right on JPike ... I use 4wd low & don't even have to use the go pedal. Amazing amount of torque. Oo.

I had a 95, Dodge, V-10 w/4:10's. I used 4wd low as well. The 95 had an auto & i had to use the throttle.

I have a smaller 4-5" curb in front of my house that I never used anything for, just backed over it, but now I paid the price. The last trip I did make it home to find the left rear tire on the 5er had a nice sized bubble in the tread/sidewall. It had gotton damaged from backing over the curb, guess I should look at building something similar to what you guys have.

Character is right Chris. This is #2 ... we ought to have our heads examined.

She's a smart one, hearing is perfect, mind of her own ... acts just like a little kid. You've probably found out, but Dalmation hair is a super pain to get out of the fabric on the rear seat. :{

On the ramps, one broke. :{ The bottom piece was 2x12, only stock they had & one split length wise ... i hear you Merrick. :) So ... built 2 new ones today, 2x8 on the bottom, 2x6 & 2x4. Liquid nails squezzed by 3 screws. Just got done putting the 2nd coat of polyurethane on them ... pics to follow.
